Thanks for the pic - they are little clowns. I just love keeping chickens!

Good morning all, It seems like Monday!!! Glad for a short week I hope, may end up working Saturday to make up for Monday as my boss already warned us! NanaKat, let me know when you need to get rid of the pigeon and if you are headed to Stillwater any time soon! Or I could maybe make a roadtrip!!! I am excited that I have some Claret x Hatch eggs in the bator and one chick hatched already, that tells me my Roo is fertile and it was the hen I had him with before. Just can't wait to see how the chick(s) turn out!!!! I have to go to work, got a load of tin scrap to haul in this evening so better leave a little early! Have a great day all!!! Lynn

Lynn, Will let you know. If I don't hear from the AU folks soon you'll be hearing from me.

Need Advice: the only chick that hatched from the "free" eggs has a cripled leg/foot. I put a boot on it to spread the toes like I do the lovebirds, but the knee joint is also affected. It's to days old and has five toes. It eats and drinks okay. Is there anything I can do besides exercise the joint several times a day? I know...some would cull, but it is active and is eatting, drinking, poopin and sleeping like a normal baby.....

I wonder if it counts if you dont weed your garden?

If I don't weed the big garden, it isn't grass that is growing around the plants. I think however that if it is tomatoes I want and they can grow in grass, I would be better off digging a hole in untilled soil, so the grass keeps out the taller and more invasive weeds.

Please describe how the joint is affected. If it is a slipped Achilles tendon because of an accident, it can be repaired easily. If it is congenital and one of hte other problems, chances are slim. With a slipped Achilles tendon, the chick will hold the leg almost normally except it won't put its foot down. If that's what it is doing, I can tell you what to try.

According to my FIL the grass keeps the hot sun off the tomatoes during the worst of our really hot summer, cooling and protecting them. I plant my tomatoes deep so the tomato root system is deeper the the grass root system, should be no competition there. If it really does work I will probably modify it next year and grow a useful grass like plant say millet, or sourgum, or quinoa.

Jordan was released from the hospital this morning. We are headed home. He has minimal swelling and pain. He was sent home with meds to take care of those issues and a high level antibiotic. We are happy now. We appreciate all the thoughts and prayers.
