Don't know yet, this is my first year to grow heirlooms. I had always thought the hybrids had more disease and pest resistance, but I want to start seed saving so this year I have switched to heirloom (or at least not hybrid) on almost everything. I am trying multiple varieties this year and will keep the best performers/tasters for next year and try some other's I didn't get this year that I wanted to try.
How about anyone else, what heirlooms have you tried and been good or bad especially through our infamous Okie summers.
I like brandywine tomatoes. That is all I planted this year!
Two kinds I have heard about and wanted to get this year (but didn't) are Jeune Flame and Sojourner. They are both supposed to be really good in the Oklahoma heat.
I grew Brandywines year before last and they rotted on the vines while still green, don't know why. Like blossom end rot only affected all the way up from the bottom. I never got a single ripe one so gave them up. I had all other kinds of tomatoes that did excellent. I've grown the lemon cukes and they are very mild and delicious! I'm having okra this year, it loves our hot Okie summers! Okra is so easy to freezy and is easy to steam or fry.
