***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Really? Good idea...since the spraying doesn't seem to be working, I think I may do that! Anyone know if the Cleveland county extension is the office off Robinson? Know I saw a sign somewhere down there.

Oh, and guess what?? I was married in Newalla at Newalla First Baptist!

We are actually south of Newalla, but closer to that than anything else, even if we do have a McLoud PO lol. I love the area though.
Where are you now?

Beth, did you get it at Poops, because my hubby went thru that cranberry jalapeno jar in the first 4 days. Tried it on a hotdog then added it to everything he ate until it was dry. lol

Diatomaceous Earth is a white powdery substance that you sprinkle in your coops or wherever you feel its needed to help keep fleas, lice and ect at bay.. NOT 100% proof but we have found it to be of a good substance to have around..

"Gatoraid" is pretty much whatever electolite you may use to help keep your poultry or animals hydrated during the heat... there are different kinds but for the general idea its like Power aid or Gator aid for animals..lol

Poultry Protector is another kinda of substance that some use to spray down their birds or fowl for mites and lice ect... it is considered all natural...

I always try to take extra care with our original flock when we introduce new ones to the barnyard... separating the newbies from the oldies for at least 2 weeks minimum to see if there is any illness... we have a "mini" coop(which houses the newbies) and currently the nursery(formerly known as the turkey pen)... because I noticed some feather lice among some of our newly aquired birds as of late... I immediatley had the kids help me clean out the cages with fresh hay... sprinkle down with DE... and spray all birds with the poultry protector... regardless if they showed feather lice or not... everyone had their waterers and feeders sanitized(even though we do this regularly) and we gave them the "gator aid" for chickens considering the weather has been HOT... ... I cant begin to tell you HOW HAPPY all our birds were... and they are normally happy chicks, ducks, goose, and turkeys any ways but the extra care we did today was so good for them... When we take care of them... they take care of us and in the long run helps keep the "snarkies" at bay... lol

Extra Preventive steps especially with any person with a chicken addiction is a must.. lol...

My son had that done during Christmas break last year. He was fine immediately after the surgery because of the pain meds, but as things started wearing off he was in pain. The recommendation was to apply cold packs every few hours so we got some at the drug store on the way home. I wished I had put them in the freezer ahead of time so they could have already been frozen. I was handing him plastic bags of frozen vegetables wrapped in a towel until the commercial ice packs were frozen. Plan for her to be sore for a few days and want to sleep alot.

I don't mind at all sharing CayuseRanch! It's from Allrecipes.com.. and it's for "Caramel Apple Jam" not jelly. I REALLY like jam better myself!

http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Caramel-Apple-Jam/Detail.aspx

Caramel Apple Jam

Ingredients

6 cups diced peeled apples (1/8 inch cubes)
1/2 cup water
1/2 teaspoon butter
1 (1.75 ounce) package powdered fruit pectin
3 cups sugar
2 cups packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Directions

In a large kettle, combine the apples, water and butter. Cook and stir over low heat until apples are soft. Stir in pectin and bring to a rolling boil, stirring constantly. Add the sugars, cinnamon and nutmeg and return to a rolling boil. Boil for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
Remove from the heat and skim off any foam. Ladle hot jam into hot sterilized jars, leaving 1/4-in. headspace. Adjust caps. Process for 10 minutes in a boiling-water bath.

They always look so easy lol. And with all that sugar, has to be good. Wonder...what is "process for 10 min in ..." Do they mean you set the jars in boiling water for 10 min? lol obviously didn't watch my mom making any of that jelly

Yes, it would go into a pot like this and boil for 10 minutes to cook, sterilize and seal the lids.

I'm jumping in and will go back and read the postings...wowit's ben busy today!!
Sold all but four of my lovebirds, the three conures and the parakeet to one of Michael D's friends today. The breeding program has just been too much with everything on my plate. Gave him a good deal and we were both happy so that's the important thing. I kept the four oldest to let them retire with me. Two of them were part of my original breeding plan to achieve a double violet.
Anyway, hubby is happy. He was having trouble with the "bird dander" and his trach and now we can use the hot tub again....

Had the friend look in on the chickens to help me get an idea on pricing on the birds I want to sell that are more banty in appearance then large fowl. He looked at the babies I have and said that those little black chipmunks I got at Atwood's may be Silver Lace Wing Wyandottes..they do have the Wyandotte combs. He said "You have some very nice birds"...that was nice to hear from someone who had bought and sold chickens for a long time.

The snake hasn't been seen today....

Thank you for sharing your experience! I will be ready with the frozen veggies as we won't have time to get the commercial ice packs. Peas and corn should work just fine! She's already been given a pain pill she started today and she will continue taking them through the next couple of days. I'm planning on mac & cheese and mashed potatoes for her to eat. I know she's going to be hungry because she's not supposed to have anything by mouth after midnight tonight.

because I am soo new I am continually looking to learn more. I have a Vitamin electrolyte Gatoraid, but see, I never thought of giving to them to help boost them thru the heat. I think tomorrow I will have the boys sanitize the waterers and fill it with gatorade. I also keep a poultry antibiotic handy cant remember its name either, and I have been seperating newbies after someone here told me to but somehow that one coop is having issues. Eventually that coop will become my "Quarantine" Coop when all the others are done.
