Anyone have experience with gapeworm? And if so, have you used levamisole or thiabendazole as treatment? Got to google those two. Can anything else be used instead?
Just lost one of my pretty Wyandotte Splash hens. The sympstoms are identical to those listed in The Chicken Health Handbook for gapeworm: gasping, coughing, eyes closed, head drawn in, yawning, head shaking, death. I noticed her yesterday doing some heavy breathing, checked her crop and it was empty. Brought her inside and fed and watered her. She body temp was so hot that I put her in a a big bowl on frozen ice packs wrapped in a towel.
The host for gapeworm is earthworm, slug or snail. I had Ivomeced the entire flock for worms and mites before I got the Girls and losing one is just heart-breaking!
I've been tossing the hens the bugs, slugs, grubs and worms that I've found when weeding the garden along with the green tops from the thinnings in the garden. The severity level is supposed to mild to moderate in adult birds. She had not started laying yet.
