***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Looks to be another scorcher of a day.

Been having a hell of a time with coons & possums. I think I've cleared them out for now. Lost a promising batch of eggs last night to a darn snake.

I've an orphaned chick running around, still in baby fuzz. It didn't take up with the bantam cochin & her brood like it's brothers & sisters. Lost mom to a coon. It seems to have adapted to being alone. Too much effort to try & catch the wild thing. It's a yard mutt anyways. I'm wondering how long it will last. At night, it sleeps in the orloff pen. During the day it hangs around a pen holding a game hen and her brood.

16 years old is good for a large dog to be living. The heat is hard on the older dogs and she may need a little energy boost. Try giving her some honey. It will go into the blood stream fairly quickly and will raise her blood sugars. If she will eat cooked egg yolks those are good quick sources of protein. Sorry to see you going thruough this...those dogs that adopt us seem to be the best and the hardest to lose. T&P are with you.

We know what you mean....Hubby baled a 15 acre tract of prairie grass mix for a neighbor. Last year he made 27 bale and this year only 5.
Cattle market is glutted this past week with livestock that western Okie farmers are selling due to drought....no grass. OKC market went from 5000 head two weeks ago to 16000 this past weekend. We're going to hang on as long as we can, because we had already culled when we purchased Angus replacement heifers this past summer. We do have some hay reserves...hopefully no one sets fires from fireworks this weekend.....

Cameron and Bill - Dogs are truly special animals. My heart goes out to you both.

Lots of skunks are prowling around our place at night. I've been tempted to sit up one evening to see which direction they're entering the chicken area from. They've done a lot of digging, but with the hot wire they haven't killed and birds yet.

Looks like Kellyville will close their swap for this month and next due to excessive heat. I've got dog dishes filled with water in my pens so the chickens can stand in them. I had a New Hampshire Red sit in the dish yesterday. When she stood her tummy was dripping, and when she shook all her neighbors got a nice shower.

I hope everyone else is having more fun today than am I. I watered the garden and the little bit of grass in the part of the yard the henhouse and run are in, then I let the clucks out to fend for themselves in the backyard and went to early church. The ladies are good at finding shady spots in the yard to rest.

Bill - sorry to hear about your dog. Sixteen is old for a Rott and it sounds like she's had a wonderful life taking care of you.

i'm sorry, did i read that right? prices were low, so some sellers pulled birds from the auction before they made it to the sale table? is this normal for auctions in that area?
