***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Just got home from lunch in Shwnee with hubby.

Looked for more Bloomset and here's what we found...Walmart and Tractor Supply do not carry any. Buford White's Ace Hardware is closed on Sundays. Atwoods (24 oz for $7.99) is sold out. Lowe's ( 8 oz for $4.75) sold out til late Tuesday or Wed. Got ours the last time at S&S Farm Center (24 oz for $8.95) but they aren't open again until Tuesday.

Tractor Supply does have guinea chicks for $4.49 each...had some chipmunk looking ones and some lavendar colored...look to be days old and healthy...had about 15.

Have Dr. appointments for both hubby and me on Tuesday afternoon. Will have to run by TLC nurseries to see if they have NoLo Bait or any Bloomset.

Wet down the pens and am chilling inside.

Auctions on holiday weekends don't do well. Yes it is normal to pull things out of a line-up instead of wasting everyone's time and then POing after they are bid on. After the first few critters are sold you can usually see the mood of the buyers. And I have seen this happen at most auctions that we attend and have seen it for years while I was hauling livestock.

With larger livestock usually a producer will haul them to an auction house that is getting better prices. Tx. Ok. and NM are where to go right now to buy cattle. We are all out of grass and it's way too expensive to grain them till the rains come back.

But if'n I was going to feed cattle out I would call BK Grain up in Enid OK. They are the only ones I know of that sets their prices according to what his ingrediants cost him.

Great info NN. With over 175 head, we'ld have to have feed delivered and then have to have a place to store it...Cost on fuel right now put the prices about even with what we can buy locally....for now. In the 2006 drought, we ended ups selling all the calves and all the bred replacement heifers as well as any cow over 9 years of age....we cut back really hard. Just back up to the numbers on the herd and may have to do it again. At least now the prices are good and the futures show a rise.

Last Thursday at Jones the horses were selling from 5 dollars up to about 250. There were some 6 and 7yo cows that were a 3 in 1 package that sold for 650, good black hided cows with good black calves and bred back to an Angus bull. They would calve out next month, way too cheap.

This spring 400 pounders were selling for up to 800 dollars, now they are not worth a plug nickle around here.

if you try that here you wont be coming back, auctions dont put up with that here. people come sometimes for certain things, or see something they want when they get there. imagine how ticked off you would be wif you waited on something to come thru and it didnt.

crasiest thing i ever heard, you never know what any item will bring. ive seen birds bringing 1.50-2.00 bucks each, then all of a sudden something blows thru at 10-15 bucks a head.

if you think it has to bring big money, advertise it in the news paper. if you want to sell it take to an auction.

that is one auction i wont have to worry about making a trip to, no way i would drive to a sale run like that.

I don't think it has anything to do with the way the sale is run. People I knew that pulled their birds could tell they were not going to get a high price for them. They just had a random bunch if hens, nothing spectacular or any eye candy, but did not want to sell unless they could get $10 a bird. No one was bidding @ the begining of the sale & as soon as they pulled their stuff the rir sold for $14, they prob jumped the gun, but didn't want to sell for bottom dollar.

People are always willing to pay more for a bird in the spring when they can bring it home & get eggs from it everyday. In this heat people are loosing birds & not gettin eggs so why buy a $15 hen in this heat?

I personally would not have pulled my birds, but I understand not wanting to put a dozen laying hens on the table if it is looking like you are only going to get $5 a bird.

We love the cement sale & no complaints! Not the fault of the auction house if birds are not bringing top dollar on a holiday weekend when it is 100 degrees out.

I agree with you jcatblum, the Cement auction is run great! It's only the extremely hot weather that kept prices down. If I had brought nice purebred hens to the auction, that normally would bring $15-20 each, and would only sell for $5 each yesterday, I probably would have PO'd or taken the birds out before they even hit the auction ring, unless I had too many birds and wasn't worried about the money. On the other hand, it is a great time to get some really good deals from people that do sell their birds, regardless of what they sell for. I don't get mad if someone pulls their birds out either. It's to be expected at auctions, or at least all the auctions that I've been to ... all over Oklahoma. I don't know about where Mefordz lives, but it costs too much to run an advertisement in our local newpaper, and even advertising on craigslist is sometimes frustrating, especially if you don't want people coming to your home, spending lots of time and buying little or nothing.

Auctions are fun

There were definitely many bargains at the Cement sale ... purebred rabbits for as low as $1 each .... nice purebred pullets and hens as low as $5 each, and nice purebred roosters for under $1 each. A beautiful royal palm tom turkey sold for less than $15. I even convinced Gerald to let our hatching eggs go for whatever they'd bring .... they sold for less than what he sells his eating eggs for. It's definitely a time for bargains due to our extreme drought, heat and the economical outlook.

I look forward to everything improving. Let's all keep our heads up, and know eventually things will get better.

We have more baby fainting goats!

I was out watering and noticed a doe in labor. I don't know if I needed to help her get the gorgeous tri-color buckling out, but I pulled on the feet when she pushed. I figured she might need help since all I saw were feet coming out & the water had already broken. The little black & white doeling popped out really fast afterward.

Gosh I wish I weren't so technologically challenged & could figure out how to use my new smart phone to take pictures ... and then figure out how to post them on the computer.
