Bill - sorry to hear about your dog. Sixteen is old for a Rott and it sounds like she's had a wonderful life taking care of you.

Dutchess passed away at noon today, She was starting to act a little like she was hurting and she just stopped breathing, It was peaceful and at least she isn't hurting anymore, 16 years is a long time to have put up with me no one else has made it that long not even close, You have no idea how close to the truth that really is she did take care of me a whole lot, Don't know who'll do it now LOL
The ground here is so hard the red clay is like a fired brick to have to dig through, I'm having to do what Cameron did and wet it for a while.

Dutchess was the most wonderful compainion, Always so very smart and seemed like she understood every word you said to her so indulge me a quick story one of so many LOL
when she was about 3 my roommate at the time had to work on a Saturday once and came home to eat his lunch he'd grabbed on his way home, I was sitting on one couch watching TV and Tim sat on the other and spread his burger and fries out on the coffee table, Dutchess came to the front door and knocked with her front paw like she would always do when she wanted in, Tim says "No, this is my lunch I didn't get enough for both of us" and Dutch turned and walked off the porch, a minute later there's a honk in the driveway and I said "I didn't hear anyone pull up" Tim leans over where he could see and says "You have got to see this!" Dutchess had jumped in the open window of his truck, Honked the horn and was sitting up in the passenger seat ready to go LOL I put on some shoes and got her to move to my truck and took her to McD's, I'll really miss her..

Elwood, sorry about Dutchess man. I almost hate keeping dogs cause I get so attached to em, knowing how things will end up one day.

Thanks to all who expressed condolences.

I'm so sorry you lost her. That kind of companionship is one of the very best gifts in life. There really are few relationships closer than that kind and who can't benefit from unconditional love? Go ahead and tell all the stories you want. It will remind us of all the special companions we have been blessed to share some time with.

I'm so sorry Bill and Cameron. I agree with MJ - telling stories about our friends who are gone are a great way to keep them in our hearts. After hearing about the days you two have had with your dogs, I called my pup Titus up on my lap, hugged him and told him what a Fine Creature he is and what a fantastic job he is doing being my loyal companion. He is 10 years old - middle-aged for a Jack Russell Terrier, and I dread the day he passes on. Thank you Lord for giving us dogs to be our truest friends through thick and thin.

Oh - remember to keep your dogs and cats in if you can the next couple of days - fireworks and thunderstorms terrify some household pets.

MJ I agree. Many of us have had that special relationship with a dog that can read our minds and gives the best that friendship has to offer.
Elwood, you have eloquently described something very special. It's nice you have those prescious memories. Any you want to share would be appreciated. I'm so sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry for your losses. This heat is so hard on animals, and the older ones, especially.
I have a twelve year old blue heeler called Hog Dog, and she has been staying in the house,
sleeping on the tile floor trying to stay cool. I found her laying in the road when I first moved
out to the country. She was just a pup, and must have fallen out of someone's truck.
My Momma said the good Lord sent me a guardian angel. She stays around and watches the
place real good. I don't know what I'll do when she's gone. I think we let our pets into a
special place in our hearts that humans rarely see. The good Lord does provide for our needs,
and the love that our pets give us is very special.
