***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Ivermectrin will get all parasites both internal and external, except Tape Worms. The injectable is usually used orally in chickens and the drench/pour-on is used externally and there is no need to use both. The drug is circulated through the blood stream so blood-sucking things such as lice and mites are wiped out as well as worms. The Zemectrin Gold will also get tape worms according to the literature included with it and as Guy said just a small tad will do it.

Did ya'll know some wormers are used as cancer drugs?

Michael, I just love your stories. The world doesn't have enough people in it anymore who have real-life stories like yours that teach morals and values like that. Your grandmother sounds like she was a wise lady. I hope the guy that traded his dog to you got what he deserved in the end.

What do you guys worm your chickens with. I have some stuff I mix with water for large flocks, but hate wasting it on the caged birds. I say waste because it says to mix up what will be drank in a day. All my cage birds have 1/2 gal drinkers and on these hot days I keep them full, not going to just try to guess what they drink in a day. Anyone use a pill or paste wormer. I used zemectrin gold on pigeons before. Just a tiny bit on finger and insert in mouth. Any sugestions. Guy

I've read and read until my eyes crossed, there's so many opinions on bird worming and I'm so new to chickens that my opinion doesn't count much. What I've decided on is Ivomec injectable used as drops on their heads (2-4 drops depending on bird size) for things like mites & lice. Then Safeguard paste (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fenbendazole) that covers most worms. With the Safeguard I'm going to give adult chickens about 1/10th of a cc (just a glob on my finger). Then good old Wazine in the water for roundworms & Sulmet in the water for coccidia because they're so easy to dose when needed. I honestly don't know how you all with hundreds of chickens manage to worm them all. Mine are all babies &/or handleable plus I don't have many so it's easy.

mjgigax - I also give my chickens a plate of chilled fruit or cut up veggies. I know some people think it's silly to do things like that (surely no one here haha) but we all get as much of a kick out of watching them eat it as they do eating it. The 3 wk old Silkies still in the brooder (bottom 1/2 of a dog crate) get their long slice of cucumber or banana every night before bed. I haven't laughed this hard in a long time watching them eat it. Then I turn the light off in that room and they pass out like a bunch of toddlers.

Since my birds don't get to free range I try to give them stuff that adds variety to their diet and gives them things to get curious about and pick at. "Treats" help get them tamer too. They raise a fuss when they see the bucket coming down the hill. The little $1.25 Buff rooster is the scout and he gets everybody interested. He sure has turned out to be a fun bird. Since he is smaller than the other roos his crow is a little higher in pitch and I can recognize it across the yard. Those little chicken "moments" are the very reason I keep chickens - the best way to end a stressful day.

We've gotten our feed from Farmer's Feed in Sapulpa for years. Family-owned business. There's also a feed store near Admiral and Yale that is supposed to be pretty good.

Betsy both Teva and I hope for a very speedy recovery for you. As everyone told me just don't overdo things, not when there is anyone watching at least!!

I appreciate all the well-wishes everyone! Vashi is seeing to it that I don't overdo--at least not too much! I'm rarely bored, but am NOW!
