***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I have a wading pool I fixed up for my free ranging birds and turkeys and peafowl to cool thier feet in I'm told that their feet being cool helps the birds stay comfortable. The reaction to anything new no matter if its feed or a wading pool is I'll have to look at that awhile and make sure it won't hurt me they do not like change;anyway, they have been taking turns standing in the water the past three days sad thing is, its under a shade tree but still not as cool as I'd like for it to be guess anything is better than nothing. My Nankin Hen I was afraid the hawk ate has shown up with two cutie pie chicks she had been setting practically under my a/c window unit. Hiding in plain sight so to speak. Have I mentioned I've also been foster Mom to the outdoor cat( all my cats are outdoor cats) seven babie kittys she's a nervous nellie and kept moving them into places that they were going to die from the heat so they are in the porch room and I have to let her in to take care of them and back out two or three times a day. Their eyes are open think I'll try and teach them how to eat and drink . I've got a fan on them. It seems to be working Mama Kitty is nervous about coming in. I'm stuck with them until it cools off... alot. I'll be looking for homes for them as soon as I can get them eating and drinking and using the litterbox.

OMG....my heart breaks for the fella who lost his standard Cochins to the heat. Sorry ,I know it broke your heart.

Stay Cool every one...............

I tried to get my girls and boys to use a wading pool but they wanted nothing to do with it. I even put dirt and then water in it. I've taken to just letting the hose flood an area next to their coop in the shade, and they love that! They wade in it, find all sorts of bugs and things to eat in it, and I've even found a few laying right at the edge of it. It's the only way I can get them to cool off in the water. It's gonna hurt when I get the water bill, but it would hurt worse to loose them!!

I have several of the black rubber feed pans that I put water in, they not only walk through it but also drink out of it. I wet the pens down a couple times a day & they are in shade with very little if any sun all day. It is just so hot & for so long. Hopefully I will continue to be lucky considering this is the only full grown hen I have lost.

We keep a wading pool under the ac drip for the dogs. My guineas have started loving it. Today the dog was laying next to the pool in a cool hole he had dug. The guineas were yelling at him for being next to the pool. Had to go get the dog & make him come inside so the guineas could hang out at the pool.

As far as electrolytes, I haven't been putting them in the water. They don't seem to drink as well. But I do put them in the buckets of oats I am soaking. So the electrolytes & water is getting absorbed into the oats & the girls gobbled it up.

My daughter was really freaked out when she picked up a hen & could feel the oats in her crop. It us kindy gross feeling, but if you are not sure where the crop is you won't have any questions after feeding them whole oats!

I use a wading pool as well, unfortunately Okmulgee water has asked everyone to limit water usage so instead of changing pool water everyday (i do every other day) i have taken gallon milk jugs, filled them w/water and freeze them. When I get home I put the jugs in the water and it cools it fantastically. It took a couple of days for the girls to get used to the idea of getting in the pool, but they have gotten over it.

This morning it was funny watching the young turkey sneak up on the pan with the soaked oats in it he didn't like the smell so didn't try them. The teen chicks looked at them for awhile when I first started feeding them...... really seem to enjoy them now. I think after the new wears off that they will be a nice treat and more food value than scratch my birds waste alot of it. I just came in from making the rounds checking on all the critters.....its brutal out there we need to be carefull for ourselves as well as for our animals. Take Care.

Pick them off and feed them to the Guineas.......come on now !!!!!! :confused:The ones with the black stripes turn into swallowtail butterflies usually find them on dill or fennel. The ones like in Kass's picture turn into lunar moths.
