***OKIES in the BYC III ***

The welsummer died. She was still looking alright a few hours ago. Think that leaves 4 welsummer hens & 1 roo. 75% died in the heat. No more welsummers. Gotta keep saying it. Hard when they lay such pretty eggs. Didn't loose a single maran this summer. Guess my pretty eggs will had to come from them.

My cats have eaten grains. But they are just weird.

Does ANYONE have a secret to removing the shells from hardboiled eggs without tearing them to shreads?? I love having fresh eggs from my own chickens, but I HATE destroying them in the de-shelling process. lol I usually peel them under cold running water. Any other ideas?? HELP PLEASE

Sorry you've lost so many. Mine have faired well through this heat.

If I didn' t get welsummers from 3 different sources I would consider that it might have just been because they were not healthy birds or something like that. I am certain they just don't hold up in the heat like the others. I have lost welsummers of all ages so the breed is the only thing I can blame. Think I would feel differently if I was loosing others to the heat regularly. We have barley had any days less than 105 in the past month & only 1 rain. There has been rain close to use, so we have gotten the humidity. The rain just seems to go around! I wonder why yours are doing better Cuban longtails. Maybe you talk nicer to your birds than I do????

Boil for 17 min ice water 17 min. Others say salt in the water also helps. I prefer to put them in the water before it boils others do the opposite. Or leave them on the counter for 2 wks then boil them.

For fresh eggs, boiling is tough. Use extra salt in the water and let them air cool rather than cooling in water. I find it very helpfull to keep two sets of eggs, real fresh for frying etc, and let some age at least two weeks prior to trying to boil. Otherwise I buy eggs from the store to boil for egg salad and the like. The ones that are in stores are at least 4 weeks old before they hit the store thats why they peel so easy.

We swore off welsumers ouselves, our other birds ate them when they were young and the welsummers allowed it happen. I have no idea how they do in the heat because we never got one past 12 weeks old.

Thanks for all the goat advise. I was just kidding about getting them for weed control. I am getting goats for milking though. I have had goats off and on since I was 12. Cant seem to go very long at a time with out wanting them again. As for sheep. I will live in a jungle, or burn my weeds before one of them will ever set foot on my property again.

I know the feeling, raised milk goats as a teen w/ my Gma loved them they were amazing, smart, affectionate animals, we got a sheep and two babies, wild, unmanagable, aloof. We were never able to tame them not even the babies, even though they were in the same area as the goats so we were out hands on several times a day feeding, milking, playing w/ the goats. I'm working on a plan for some pygmy nubian milkers. Isn't going to happen tomorrow, but I'm working on it.
