It was good to see lots of BYCers Last night in blanchard. DD is thrilled with the golden seabrights she got, the are in our old coop from when we lived in town. I spoke to the guy who brought the guinea eggs I took home. He says they should be good. I took his word & set them all. Put them in the incubator by date & we will see how well the eggs collect 9-11 hatch. kept considering buying cages, but I knew that we were after those seabrights & there was a few other DD liked. We paid out about 10 & those rumpless birds were about to come to the table. I left & didn't see what they went for. The way they were caged I couldn't see them well. I think one had a tail but the owner said no it just had it's hind end up.
Told DD this is going to be it for hatching for a while. We have 10 dz eggs set now and we are going to run out of warm space for them to grow out in. Unless I can sneak some birds in the main part of the barn. Dh may get a bit grumpy -- he already fussed a tad that I have pens on 3 sides of the barn & the barn is his space.
Prarie hen--- think those slate guineas might be ment to find a new home here in Cement. Maybe we can work something out.
Buster I would love to slaughter my extra birds instead of taking them to sale. Not something I think I can do on my own. Dh never seems to have any extra time away from work, rent houses & farm life. He says we can slaughter, but it never makes it to the top of the list. Plus I can't slaughter a pretty bird that I know someone else would like to have for their flock. Keep trying to think if it is worth me driving to Carnegie for feed. I think I will try it this month & see how it does for us. I do have the feed reciepe Grady uses. Figure i also will need part of it mixed with a little higher protien content. Now I need to work on getting my feed order together I guess. Do you put Fertrell in your mix?

A lady I buy my marans from mentioned that the collinsville livestock auction wasn't letting the poultry peeps there any longer! That is no bueno! She lives in claremore so that was a pretty short drive for her. I've been to the admiral flea market, kind of scary. Last time I went there, their was a guy was selling some sorry looking chicks. Haven't been back since. Has it gotten better?
Does the lady in claremore still have marans?
I do have a 6mth old rooster I need to find a new home for. He's just now starting to show he's a boy...lol
I thought he was a pullet for a long time.

Sounds like everyone had a nice visit at Blanchard and MD made a killing....hope he sold a bunch this morning.
Spent yesterday cutting sunflower trees from the yard and garden...should make a note for next year's garden to pull all of them. Some had trunks 2 inches in diameter and were over 10 feet tall!
This morning was nice and cool. Enjoyed a morning alone with the birds, dogs and cows. Jarvisroo was chasing his hens around the little coop in their pen, then the girls would duck into the coop to get away from him....active young male. Let the teens out first. Some are old enough that their combs are getting red so should be laying before long. Those little birds show no fear...marched right into the pen with the bull, cow and calf we have up. After an hour, the teens went in for their treats and the big girls got a free-range time. The most are two years old and were cavorting like chicks...flying, turning in mid air....loving the cool morning.
Hubby left at 6:30 am to load out the herd in Choctaw to take to market. They made two trips with two trailers and now he is home washing out the trailers. Some of those calves would have been nice feeder stock for winter but with the drought, we aren't keeping anything unless it is just really nice. We've been purchasing registered Angus and Limflex (Angus Limosin cross) for the past two years and are switching the focus of our bloodlines. This is the year to make many cuts in the Brangus/Limosin bloodlines. We may end up selling anything over 5 years of age...nice breeders with no calving issues...just because of the hay shortage and the drought. Our recently purchasedregistered two year old Angus bull from Express is limping due to a foot issue. He's been to the vet now twice for toe trims. He had been able to cover three cows then hurt his foot pawing the ground at the bull across the road. If that doesn't heal up, he may go to town too.
