***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Could be several things....need more information...for starters:
How does she use her legs?
Does she lift one all the way up like a Russian march and then lower it before picking up the other leg?
Is she down on her knees?
Are the legs stretched to the sides or crossed under her?

Is there anything different about her toes...are they curled or relaxed?

Humm, perhaps she is trying to lay and egg and is egg bound? I have a Coronation Sussex hen that I had to bring up to the yard to keep my eye on. She acts like she is trying to push out an egg. She has very poor balance and can't walk very well.

Her legs stopped working...she can't pick her self up at all...one leg drags behind...the other "kind of" goes under her. She is stuck on her belly. Toes are relaxed. For movement, she flops like an inch worm using her wings like arms....kind of hard to explain. But she pretty much stays put in one spot...eyes are alert and it just seems like she went paralyzed from the "waist" down...everything else works. Her legs have good color and feel normal temp to touch. Hope this description helps.

Could be one of a few things.... But none are very good. Most likely bacterial infection causing paralysis, possibly Mereks. We have some problems with our sebrights on occasion and it is never till they touch the ground... then we loose them quickly. I always cull them when they do that of course since I have been culling them for that I have seen fewer instances.

any chance of botulism? what color is her poo? don't cull her just yet- its possible to pull them through in some situations- let me check my files- i did lose one to something similar, and the local 'elder' called it range fever- but if she were mine, isolate her, and monitor food and droppings

here are a couple links-

We separated her from the flock and isolated her from the all other birds...after trying what little we know, she did continue to eat and drink normally...she was culled this evening. I don't think she was suffering, but she wasn't right....more importantly we didn't want it to spread. Right now all the other birds are doing well showing no symptoms.

I was just curious as to what the cause may have been.

Thanks.

We had her isolated for three days...she ate well and droppings were normal consistency/color...thanks for the links though...trying to get info encase this happens again or as a preventative anyway.

The odd thing, this was from our isolated run that have no interaction with any other birds, nor do they free range like we let our others do. This is was our heritage breed (Buckeye) pen that we watch like hawks.

You are likely better off just getting them all from Michael at this point. especially since you only want pullets. Most will be selling pairs to help get rid of extra cockrells. It has also been a rather hard year for raising good birds so supplies will be limited.

I know a lady who has lavender orpingtons for sale. Real nice looking. She lives in claremore. She has pullets I'm pretty sure. I got my blue orpingtons from her. They are awesome looking.
