There were 24 eggs in the hen house when we got back from taking calves to market...had a flat on one of the trailers on the way home...glad it wasn't on the way up there. We check the tires, air pressure, oil, lights etc on the trucks and the trailers before load-out. This tire was a new trucking tire and blew off all the tread...wow. We always carry a big tool box in the back of one of the trucks and each driver keeps their cell phone charged to communicate. Even with the flat it was a 2.5 hour turnaround trip...made good time.

We are still getting after shocks...Another neighbor lost their chimney too. We have several elderly folks around us and they say they don't ever remember this many quakes. One little lady lives in the home her husband's family built over 100 years ago. It has an artesian well with great pressure. She lost enough of the brick on her chimney that it will need to be rebuilt. She uses a wood burning stove to heat her two story home and it was vented out that chimney. Several neighbors are going to get together and get her fixed up. We have great neighbors!!

We are both going to take naps today to try to catch up on sleep lost last night....Still cn't convince Red it is okay to sleep anywhere but under my feet or on my lap.

Dang, what a weekend. We got the pens done enough to get the Cochin boys (& the Silkie boy that lives with them) moved into their 10'x10' pen & the Faverolle pair moved into their 8'x8' pen. The 4 Cochin pullets moved into their 10'x10' 2 wks ago. We sectioned the inside of the building so the boys & Faverolle pair each have their own room, the 4 Cochin pullets have the main area that's left over. I've still got 2 sides of 5' fencing to put up for the Silkie's Bachelor pen til it's done. The Faverolles have stockade fencing on 2 sides, the side of the 8'x8' building on the 3rd side and fencing on the front. It should be a nice cozy yard & bedroom for the 2 of them & everyone will be safe, warm & dry. And it keeps the Cochins apart from all the others so hopefully no one gets sick. I've still got to run hot wire all around the pens but they're inside the fenced back yard so should be safe for now.
It's sure a lot of work though. Which one of you forgot to tell me about the work involved in housing all these birds?

I finally got the photos to upload, and I realize I don't have one showing the barred cochin hen. She was in the nest box when I went out with the camera this morning, so I guess I forgot to go back to get her to pose. She goes into her nest box a lot. That's a really good sign.

The cornish cross rooster and hens are enormous. I bought them to butcher, but I'm keeping them a few days more to observe them. I want to be sure there is no sign of illness before they go into the freezer. The rooster seems quite active, and one of the hens got up on a low roost (6" from the ground). They eat like big dogs and poop more. My own meat crosses are as active as pure breeds, and they don't plop down where they just left a pile, so I'm thinking this may be my only foray into the world of fast broilers. They're just not normal.

The Dominiques are beautiful. I'm thinking about making a gift of some of them to a friend who would like to keep some laying hens. My friend has had a difficult time (health issues), and I thought keeping three or four hens might brighten her days. I may put an A-Frame tractor together for them to live in until their new owner decides how big a yard she wants her hubby to build. I'm getting my DH to check with her DH before any birds are transported. I hope he (her DH) can keep a secret. I don't know how he's going to ask if she's still interested without telling her all the details.

The silkie juvies are shy but settle down fast after being picked up. I hope there are two are three females in the group. I'll probably end up with five boys. We'll just have to wait and see. They are quite varied in color. Anyone know what to call the colors I've got?

I LOVE that show! I can relate to Sheldon all too well haha! I want to find 2 more Faverolles hens for this boy and I was going to name them Bernadette & Penny

The USMC ball went well... best one in Oklahoma City that we've been to in the past 3 years that he's been at the Fox battery. The best ceremony still goes to the Marines at the Ft. Sill schoolhouse (that's where they teach the 0811s and 0814s, they are cannon-cockers, artillery unit with HIMARS rockets). Before James transferred to the Fox Battery, he was with the Broken Arrow infantry unit (TOW missiles) for 8 years. If they fix his re-enlistment package, he'll re-up. Right now they have it all messed up, and he'll fall off contract on the 14th. No offense, but I really don't think they'll make it in time... which means James might be out on the 14th. He's really upset about this whole fiasco, so it was really nice to have a good birthday ball experience.

Because he were so busy (he's a Platoon Sgt), the only pictures we have together are really our professional ball pictures. James did take a picture of me, I'll upload it later and post it.

The chickens seemed to survive the earthquake, but my cats were freaked out when we got home this morning. My large fishtank seems to be alright too, and nothing was on the floor that wasn't supposed to be....

I'm not a great housekeeper. My daughter stayed the night with some friends of ours last night and they watching movies when the quake hit. Luckily our friends have been through quakes before and were able to educate her in where the epicenter was, about aftershocks, etc. Those were the best people for her to have been with.

Ok, so much for the wall of text. I need to figure out what's going on with my homework and such.

Mitzi, you can come build me some coops and runs, those are awesome! i have had to use what i have available, and i hate sheet metal, but thats what i have to use for some things.... spent today putting a roof on the banty run, in case we do get inundated with rain... would love to have mine look as nice as yours! maybe a couple coats of paint would help

Robin, keep in mind I've had 4'x4's jutting out of the ground for these pens since the weekend before I even got the NN's from you

It just takes so long to squirrel away $20 here and $17 there until I get up enough to "buy a side" for the pen. It's really frustrating but I'd rather spend the money on these birds than furniture and nice cars.
