***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hi Marybeth, are you going to the Honey show????

With the rain coming down - and since I don't have any indoor roosters to wake me up with their crowing - it was a great morning to sleep later than usual.

Afternoon All!

Just taking a break before I get back at it. Got the water barrel set up, so excited that it worked. Had to do some rigging to make it work better but so far, so good. Was going to install a shut-off valve in the line to the back bathroom, since I am not using it, but can not find out where it goes under the trailer and I don't want to start cutting random holes in the insulation.

Now I am going to go get the water spigot installed, that way I will have water outside this winter without hauling it.

Just have to remember to drain the hoses every time I use them.
I think tomorrow I may tackle the leaky faucet in the bathtub, since the weather is supposed to get cold.

Have I mentioned I am totally not ready for winter to be here. I do have electric pipe wrap on the way.

Now I just need a thermo cube and tank heater and we will be golden.

Well better go back at it. Spigots not going to install itself.

Have a good one folks!

I got home around 11:30 last night after the Stilwell sale. It rained most of the drive back, so I had to go a lot slower than the speed limit. Dark, wet roads and high winds make me ultra cautious behind the wheel. I couldn't sleep so some of you got PMs from me with a time stamp of 2 or 3 a.m.

There were quite a few birds at the sale, but I was only there to buy cockerels. I was in the market for young LF cockerels for caponizing. I brought home two Coronation Sussex Split cockerels, a couple of Black Java cockerels, and a trio of blue Andalusians. I'm not going to caponize the Andalusian cockerel, he was just too pretty to pass up.

I was impressed with the variety. A pair of Sebastopol geese went for more than sixty each. Very pretty, but a little rough. I'm sure they'll clean up nicely. I was sorely tempted to bid on them. Chinese and Pilgrim geese were also available, and buyers practically stole them. Again, I was tempted, but I don't have the facilities to raise geese.

Joe went home with a pair of Shamo. I don't remember what he bid, but I know it was much lower than I've seen Shamo sell for. Again, the chicken temptress was after me, but I didn't give in. The auctioneer pet a stuffed rooster every time someone got a really good deal on a bird or birds, which was often. Buying low happened more than selling high.

Here's the stuffed rooster the auctioneer kept petting. I think the winning bid for him was around $15.00 (the stuffed rooster, not the auctioneer).

The Shamo sure were pretty. I don't know anything about the breed, other than I sure had an urge to buy them.

There were lots of ducks and geese for sale. I was tempted by the large group of white runner ducks, very young, sold in pairs, and most went for about six dollars each; but I said, "NO! I'm not bidding." ... Just in my head, though, so that I wouldn't be confused with those who were buying lovely, inexpensive, white runner ducks.

In the wonderful world of trucking there is a do-dad called a bulkhead connector that is used to run air lines through solid partitions. They come in various sizes and have internal pipe threads to mount NPT fittings to. We have used them in oil pans on trucks and fuel tanks to mount heaters so those things will start in the winter. Just drill a hole, seal and tighten one nut. But you must be able to get to the back side. I have also used them to install nipple drinkers in barrels for hogs.

A Cummins engine holds about 10 or 15 gallons of water and we used 1500 watt block heaters on them and in very cold weather, 30 and below, it would warm up the block just enough to where you could feel it with your hand. If you are mounting the barrels outside you may need to look at a boost of the wattage as it sounds like the 50 watt heaters are for inside use.

They make a 500 watt tank type heater for cars that would work good. just mount two bulkhead connectors in the barrels, plumb the heater in, plug it in and you are finished. The tank types usually have a thermostat in them that shuts them off at around 35 deg or so.

Sounds like there were some good buys at the Stilwell auction. That's a mighty fine looking stuffed rooster up there by the auctioneer!

Do you do your own caponizing? That might /might not be something you could demonstrate at the upcoming swap in June.

Evening all! Catching up on all the posts...wow! Hope everyone is getting ready for the weather coming in!

Muesky- A few pages back you asked about aquarium heaters...they do work for aquariums that are in room temp water taking it a few degrees higher...they would burn out very quickly in cold weather...good idea but don't think you would be happy with the outcome.

Sshavney- we bought our Oxine on line...but PM if you need some in the soon time...we'll mix you up some...a little goes a long way....great stuff, we swear by it!

Congrats to all the hunters of deer and great of deals at auctions...
