***OKIES in the BYC III ***

When I twist a spur off, there is a sharp spur beneath the old spur sheath. If I cut the newly exposed spur straight across, how will that affect the future spur sheath that is bound to form?

Dont cut the newly exposed spur. When trimming the spur you are cutting off the outer spur right about where the inner spur ends. The spur will keep growing and will need trimmed again down the road. problem with twisting the outer sheath off you still have a very sharp spur sticking out, just not as long. That is why I prefer trimming to twisting.

I was trying to quote Guy's info on spur trimming and I'm on my iPad and it's not cooperating with the new forum.
Anyway, Guy, what I do is wrap the rooster in a towel and have my husband use the dremmel tool. I have him cut it about 2/3 of the way down. The blade has high enough rpm's that it cauterizes (no spell check here with my iPad lol) it and there's no bleeding at all. The rooster hops down and runs off with his dignity intact.
Excellent advice.

I haven't had to cut spurs yet, all the roo's I've kept are docile and don't attack the few roo's I have had that are aggressive I just take to the sale that seems to be the best approach so far, I really like the ones that I have now they are fairly gentle and don't mind if I get close to them and a couple of them will eat out of my hand even, They are all easy on the hens so that I can live with, The best one I had was the Roo I got from Deanne but he was killed by one of my neighbors dogs he just though he was way above having to stay in a pen and was a constant companion in the yard when I was out with them I sure do miss him he was a joy to have around

Elwood, I don't do it because of aggressiveness, I do it for the hen's sake. That can't be comfortable with those things gouging in your side lol

When I was a kid we used to cut them half way from the tip to the leg I remember we had a hot butter knife that we would use if the cut were to bleed a bit too much, I guess that's why I prefer to not cut much off if any at all, I have styptic powder now just in case but the only time I have had to use it is when I clipped the dogs toenails and it bleeds a bit

It's kinda funny but Guy asked that I at least tell people when I sell an aggressive Roo that it might be a bit mean but last night I sold 3 White Rocks and all 3 of them were mean, I didn't have to tell anyone they showed their stuff when they were taken out of the cages LOL even Jim was boxing with one of them

I've not had to deal with human aggressive rooster yet, thankfully. The breeds I happen to like are pretty passive. I can't imagine a mean rooster straight outa' the cage!
