***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I am going to set up at Marys tomorrow. Was going to go today but thought it was a little cool. Remember the topic we was talking about a few days ago about small houses. We are tired of being cramped so are going to be selling some of the antiques we have had boxed up. So if you are into that sort of thing come on down. (sounded a little like Monte Hall there didnt I) Also will have 1 pair of nice young Bantam Shamo and some awesome brown, recessive red and recessive yellow racing homers.

Guy's tip of the Day
It is just a tad cool out, ut for Jan. It is awesome. My tip for today is get up off our butts in front of this computor and get out and enjoy the weekend. For one day we will wake up and not be able to.

It was beautiful weather outside this afternoon. I didn't stay outside long because I have really downsized and consolidated to reduce the number of pens needing to be fed, but it was a joy to be outside in a layered long sleeve t-shirt and be comfortable in the sunshine.

We decided to get serious with this chicken business this year.

My friends Grady and Erin are moving east to Virginia to take over one of Joel Salatin's rental farms and basically work as a subcontractor for him. So, they are selling all their stuff. I bought the below eggmobile. They were running 400 hens in it last year. It comes complete with egg boxes, feeders, and watering system supplied by two 50 gallon drums, that provides water both inside and out. It has slated floor so the poop falls through to the pasture below. You basically park it on pasture, open the doors in the morning, and close it up at night. You park it there until the birds have used the area to a moderate degree, then move to fresh pasture.

It is so cool. With this, we should be able to up our flock of layers significantly, and sell our eggs as 100% free range pastured poultry at the local farmers market.

Also bought 3 Salatin style broiler pens.

That huge trailer sort of gives a new meaning to the term "chicken tractor." Looks like a lot of chicken processing is in your future.
Is there a good market in your area for free range eggs at the farmer's markets?

Hi, P&B. I'm not sure. Nobody has ever sold free range there. But there is a good market for eggs. :)

I won't start out at 400 layers, just what the market will bear. but will work into it over time. My goal is to have something nice going by the time I retire in 5 years.

That's the plan, anyway.

Looks like you are well on the way to a sustainable source of healthy food for the community and some income for your family. Definitely, a win-win situation.

Just popping in to say hi and brag a bit. My baby girl is excited today. She made the front page of the local newspaper. Of course the reporter made a mistake and reported things incorrectly, but it's still a good story.

how reliable are those foam bators? read pro and con on them

Today's agenda is soap (I make cold process primarily, Robin, thanks for asking!), housework, and looking at a house. And spending waaaaay too much time online looking at chicken coops & contemplating Australorps.

Muesky, I didn't know Mary's was still there, that takes me way back. Good luck with the car.
i am wanting to get started in simple soap making, so would love some recipes!

can't go wrong with astralorps- my tick is a nosy girl... she'll come up and tell me all about her day...

i do, but they are on the far side now- seramas are getting ready to hatch within the next few days... the only advantage to bators is i can schedule it...LOL!

Evening all!
Wow! 400 layers is a bunch buster! Hope you can find a good cheap feed source. We have a lot of those wagons in this area and I was wondering how they could be utilized, can't wait to see more pics.

Spent the day at a new(to us) auction in Ky. today. I really liked it. They sold everything "you pick your choice, take 1 or all". I love being able to do that instead of haveing to buy a whole box of something when theres only one or two that catch you eye. I sold three rabbits and bought three but made money on the ones I sold and bought the others cheaper! Also sold a few bantams and bought three pigeons. Or should say rescued three pigeons. Some heartless dumb--s put four pigeons, three turkeys and four pekin ducks in a rabbit cage! And yes the pigeons eneded up on bottom. One died. Apparently the owner has been neglect for a long time, one pigeon had a string wrapped around its foot,so deeply embedded it had cut one toe off and another was just hanging on by a sliver. They were all healed and calused over so had been there a long time. The string was still there! I finally got it cut and pulled ou,the bird will limp but live.
This was a good sale, looks like a good one to buy at. So thats always good. It was jsut a bit discomforting as it was kinda back in the hills and had a "Deliverance" feel to it!lol
