***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Ksane Yes, I grow dubia's (South American roaches) and meal worms for my chickens. I also want to try black soldier fly larva this coming year, I tried them last year but was unsuccessful, hopefully I'll be better organized this coming year.

I had a busy day today, on top of what i have been doing at work they have made me the new animal control person. i had a call from someone whose chickens were being killed by their neighbors dog,but due to how they are zoned (same stupid zoning i'm in) I couldn't do anything about it. I didn't like it but it was all I could do. the dog got some creel OEGB that her kids show in 4H. i hated to tell them I couldn't do anything but I did tell them about BYC and us Okies.

How is something zoned where someones dog can eat someones elses chickens and nothing can be done?

Thank you Carl, I think this will be a quicker healing than the last shoulder. If he behaves himself. LOL.

Coral, I went with a very light blue, everything I have read said lighter colors for the summer time heat. When I got home with it DD said I should of got yellow & we could of painted black lines. That would of been alot more fun! Once it is all painted I will post a picture. Right now I am only working on painting the bottom board & the hive body because that is all I will need to start out.

When I bought my kit I got it large enough that I would have everything to grow with. I have two hive bodies, two super shallows & frames for all.
Kara and Coral,
I (am I am sure others) enjoy hearing about your bee projects.

Been away from the computer for a few days, so just finished scanning the 300+ post. Honestly can't remember everything, but I caught the highlights.
Welcome to all the new folks!
Was suprised to read Guy & Michael sat up @ Mary's in the HORRIBLE wind! It was bruttle Sunday.
Sooner, did surgery go well? Hope for a quick recovery.
Nana glad the test results came back clean.
I see everyone is still talking bees.... maybe ya'll can get my hubby to hear bees are a good thing & my melons & the rest of my garden would love to have bees visit.
Love seeing pics of the cute chicks.
Buster so glad you got the chicken tractor from Grady. I am going to make the next Lawton Farmers Market meeting, just to get a feel for it. Still don't know if I want to take produce to Lawton Market or Chickasha. If I take produce to Lawton I will bring eggs, but I am thinking more like 40-50 dz a month (a drop in the bucket to the layers you will have). I know Lawton Market will mean better prices & more customers, but also means longer drive & more rules.

Oh Coral, I am thinking to make the tarp roofs last longer you could run a few straps across the roof to prevent any flapping. My plastic on the hoop house was flapping some. We cut some old irragation line in pieces & every 2-3 ft DH screwed the plastic tubing over the green house plastic (using a washer between the screw & plastic tube). There is no moving of the plastic once the strips were added. We used up all the old irragation stuff we had, so he said next ones we will use old water hoses. ~ Very interested to hear how the capons turn out! I have about 20 roos I hatched this fall that I am giving 6 more wks until they go in the freezer.
I spent the last few days working on starting seedlings (thinking I have WAY too many seeds). The hoop house is now all the way up. Excited to report it survived the 30 MPH winds, that was a HUGE relief. Also have my sister moved most of the way. I some how ended up with a trailer full of stuff, including her deep freeze, the furniture that use to be in my grandmas room & some oak shelves & sofa table my dad had built. She was going to get rid of the stuff & I couldn't see tossing my Grandmas furniture, so it is now in my shed. I figure I will put the deep freeze @ the barn. DH doesn't think we need a 2nd deep freeze, but I told him I would use it for chickens & he didn't complain. This is a busy week. DD has basket ball tournament, looks like games everynight!

So funny!!!!!!!!!!!!! " make food noises for real girls"

OMG, Tony, you're a genius lol! Why didn't I think of that???? That way the girls will still get a break because some days I can skip and not put a boy in there. The boys will get a change of scenery and get to make food noises for real girls instead of each other. My husband says they always look confused when they make the food noise and toss food to another chicken and then look up. He says they're thinking, "Dang! You're a dude!"

What a cool picture! Every time I see baby pictures I think how awesome it would be to have tiny baby chicks to cuddle and play with. Then I look out into the yard and realize it wouldn't ever end. They grow up and 3 months later I'm still without baby chicks to play with. I'll admire your baby pictures but just be thankful it's not me having to raise them & build pens for them, how's that?

Thats what I was wondering cowboy! If nothing else wouldn't it fall under state law where if they are destroying livestock they can be killed? I never heard of a place being zoned that allowed dogs to run free and kill stuff! I sure wouldn't want to live there!
