***OKIES in the BYC III ***

That is wonderful that they are doing that! I didn't realize they could have birds in OKC.

I think it is certian parts of OKC or the metro but likey rooster restricted. I will have more details shortly but if I recall correctly it was to be placed in lower income area for the community benefit of fresh eggs.

So glad to read that POOPS is in the works. DD has asked a few times, she really enjoyed all the birds & hanging out with other chicken loving kids.

Not sure if we will make the auction this wk. we have 3 wks until DH schedule gets WAY crazy. So lots of projects to work on. Found a to do list we made last July & most of it still isn't done. Told him last wk we live project to project!!

Buster I will try & snap some pics of the hoop house soon, at first I thought it was nice to have a space so much larger than the lean- to greenhouse I had in town, but I already see the hoop house will be bigger soon.

Everyone, that was my reaction to the roach jewelery, yuck, creepy, eeeewwwww.

Love the B roach comment!

Ksane, my aquarium in 29 x 12 x 18, I don't know the gallon size. I have 8 egg flats in it and it is to capacity now. It took 8 months to be able to harvest b/c I started w/ so few, you could harvest sooner if you started w/ more or if you didn't want to harvest as many. I'm trying to grow my colony to a size big enough to cover most of my chickens protien needs (with some other insects I'm growing) but if you just wanted a treat amount you could start harvesting earlier. I've got a new container I'm working on that will triple or quadrupal my colony size.

Hello everyone, I just want to reassure everyone that that there is a plan for a Spring POOPS in the works.I apprecaite all of the offers to help from people and as soon as we progress a little further I will let you know. I am waiting on a few people to call back. The tenative time frame right now is for late April and somewhere around the OKC metro area.

Let me know if there's anything I can do to help. Please?
You've got my number and if you lost it, PM me.

Shot in the dark. Any of you okies within short driving distance to SW Arkansas and have small, started pullet for sale? I am in desperate need of a small, started pullet to share a coop with my handicapped silkie X.

Can be mutts, can be handicapped. I just need one, will take two or three. Need them like yesterday.

Guys tip of the Day
With feed prices going up every time we go to buy it. It is important that we get as much back from our chickens as we can. Nothing bothers me more than a hen or hens that eat eggs. I have been lucky and have not had this problem in many years. Prevention is the best medicine. If possible gather eggs 2 or 3 times per day. Make sure you provide enough nesting for the amount of hens you have. i try to make sure I have 1 nest per 3 hens at least. make sure you keep lots of soft nesting material in the nests to provide a cushion for the eggs. Provide some for of calcium like oyster shell to be sure the eggs have strong enough shell. Broken eggs are the first step in hens eating eggs, once they start it is harder to stop them. Provide plenty of fresh clean water as some hens eat eggs for the liquid content. Others eat them out of boredom. But most get started because of a broken egg in the nest. If you have this problem already place a few golf balls in their nests. Pecking on the hard golf balls will stop some hens. I have never had to try this, but read that if you blow the egg. (Poke small hole in both ends and blow contents out. Then take a syringe and fill the egg with mustard. I assume hens hate mustard. Like before stated, prevention is best defense. Good chicken husbandry practice and you should not have this problem.

That's a 30 g aquarium, I'm assuming that it's the actual square inches of floor space that matters to them, like other animals? But then if you stack the egg flats like it showed on the Roach Guy's page you could really fit more in. I've got so many big tanks around here that are just sitting empty or stacked on the front porch. (I keep thinking I'll put an ad on Craigslist for them but then I'd have to give complicated directions to everyone who called because we don't live in an easy to find place). I could take one of the 36 x 18 tanks and make a really nice colony

I'd love to do what you're doing-grow enough insects for their protein-wonderful idea. My very favorite chickens will all be all in the back yard area in the next few wks. They're the ones I'm concentrating on.
I compartmentalize everything and we've all got our favorites, so this works for me. Carl, you don't have much on me in the looney tunes dept either ;-)
Thank you for the info, Kass. This is an excellent idea and so much easier than I thought all this time when I'd read your bug posts.

I am new to the board but love reading all about the "Okie birds". I have a questions, where is the best place to buy your young birds? We have bought guineas from the swap meet and from a man in Dale, then got our original 10 birds from a friend in trade for some labor she needed done. Our last pullets we bought from someone on craigslist (ended up being someone we knew). But I want a few young roosters and a few barred rock pullets but not sure where to buy from. We have gotten so blessed by getting healthy birds so far I want to keep it that way.

Thanks,
Cathie

I cant remember if I have posted this picture or not. I bought this old cage and am doing some work on it to make it functional again. I think it is very neat that the old produce company name is still on it.
