***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Sooner do you have any of the Foxfire books? Lots of good onfo in them about Molasses making. The press looks like it has fluted rollers in it and with imagination should be easy to make.

Les,
Can you psot, e-mail or pM a pic? I may need to do some reading to understand required pressures but if I had a picture, and some basic requirements I bet it could be done.

It's Friday!! this has been a long week, I'm getting over a bug that had me beat down since last Friday but feeling like myself again so now to play catch-up around here, I will be at Blanchard tomorrow night I have my incubator ready and thinking about finding some chicken seeds to plant in it,

Guy, I found that 1947 movie on a site but it wouldn't download the link was broken, the description for the movie said it was a Ma and Pa Kettle film I was wondering if that was mismarked or correct,??

Chicken seeds! He, he, he.
I am getting the "chick itch" really bad. I don't plan to start hatching until March. Maybe if I get to hold some chicks at Blanchard I will be ok till March.

So I was off, lol anyway I hope everyone is enjoying their Friday. It has been a bittersweet day for me
My first hatch ever has yielded me 5 babies between last night and today. I am expecting 2-3 more before its over. I ordered 12 eggs, and 18 were shipped to me. Of those I had one blood ring, one early death and the rest were clear so I am pretty happy with my hatch so far. I'm way excited to finally have them here, the last three weeks has drug on and on.
But this new adventure comes with sadness. My bantam faverolle hen passed overnight. I noticed she seemed lethargic Wednesday evening and put a heat lamp on her and some boosters in her water, when she hadn't gotten better on Thursday i gave her some antibiotics. But my actions were fruitless :-/ as many of you know I cleared my flock for the bantam salmon pair and a trio of blues, well it seems the trio of blues is getting put off more every time i try with them, possibly indefinitely. So my poor rooster is now all alone and was very upset when i left this morning, It breaks my heart to lose this girl and to see him so upset. I am now at a loss as to what to do next :( another bantam fav girl seems impossible. I was going to get some bantam cochins again and was putting it off until spring but i may have to start early so my boy will have company.
I think I may try to get to Blanchard for the sale tomorrow if i can find time to get there, when does it start and how long does it usually run? Is there usually a good variety there?

So Sorry.

After helping my sister move all day I came home & tried to use up a few extra eggs. I made an egg dip-- kinda like devil eggs, but in the blender with a few other ingredients. Also made adokaat. To me it is similar to egg nog-- suppose to sit in fridge for 2 wks -- so think I will save it for valentines. Doubt I will make the auction tomorrow. Our whole house generator finally arrived-- so installing it is now the top priority. Which means I need to be available to hand DH tools & hold the flashlight. You know. All the real important jobs.

I was thinking about the rollers out of either a Roots or a Detroit supercharger in front to break up the fibers and a set of smooth rollers in back to do the actual pressing. They look like the old wringer washers. The reason I would try to find a set of supercharger rollers is that they are highly polished Aluminum and would clean easily and not rust in storage.

It would be like the crimpers on a swather that are adjustable for clearance.

Most presses that I have seen pictures of have about a 20 foot pole with a mule walking in circles to power it. But if a gear reduction engine was used the mule could be eliminated. Cement mixers have the gear reducing motors on them.

I am proud to announce that some of my stubborn hens are finally learning to go into their coops on their own now! Three of them, in fact. It's only taken weeks, .... no months ... well, some of them a couple of years to learn to do this. A light with a timer on it that comes on about an hour before sundown helped a lot. Now it's up to the others to follow suit.

Chickens can be suprizingly stuborn.

I have just joined this website. We are just learning about chickens. We live in the country and in the process of building a coop. What kind of chickens do I want? I need some guidance.

Carl it seems that the old presses are hard to come by. Just did a quick search and the least expensive press that I found would process 1,000 pounds an hour and had a 5hp requirement. The cost was $14,000 None of the pics that I saw showed the internal workings. But I bet I'm on the right track.

For excercise and extra nutrition I will hang what is called a liver ball. Basically it is a hunk of raw liver that is tied like a roast and suspended just out of the chicken's reach so they have to make a little jump to get it. The liver is tough so a bird is only able to tear off small chunks at a time.

To suppliment as you are wanting to do I would just cut it into small pieces.

Thank you Les...great idea!
