Carl it seems that the old presses are hard to come by. Just did a quick search and the least expensive press that I found would process 1,000 pounds an hour and had a 5hp requirement. The cost was $14,000 None of the pics that I saw showed the internal workings. But I bet I'm on the right track.

I am going to call some family I have in Northen Kansas, they have been up there on the family farm land since the mid 1800's and doubt anything has ever been discarded. One of them may know or have something the family used years ago. A Re-furb 1800's press could just be th etrick.

I have just joined this website. We are just learning about chickens. We live in the country and in the process of building a coop. What kind of chickens do I want? I need some guidance.

You want Naked Necks. They are a good dual purpose bird and a good layer of large brown eggs. They will go broody and make excellent mamas plus they are very people friendly. In the 30 some years we have raised them I have never had a rooster flog me or any other family member.

I was thinking about the rollers out of either a Roots or a Detroit supercharger in front to break up the fibers and a set of smooth rollers in back to do the actual pressing. They look like the old wringer washers. The reason I would try to find a set of supercharger rollers is that they are highly polished Aluminum and would clean easily and not rust in storage.

It would be like the crimpers on a swather that are adjustable for clearance.

Most presses that I have seen pictures of have about a 20 foot pole with a mule walking in circles to power it. But if a gear reduction engine was used the mule could be eliminated. Cement mixers have the gear reducing motors on them.

I have a late 90's ford 3.8 supercharger sitting in the garage.. I also have open access to a feed mill and many un-used mills etc. they have. I am certian we can make something work, I just need to better unerstand teh process itself then trial and error till it works.
Now I'm real curious.. about moisture content requirements, etc. in order to properly extract the liquid sugars from the sorgum.

I am getting the "chick itch" really bad. I don't plan to start hatching until March.

wait till March? what is wrong MJ, you wil be so far behind you will not ever catch up... I am already picking through young birds.. now I just need someone to come get the extras I dont want.. It's tough to make progress when you stop hatching or limit what you do hatch so just fire teh bator up, and get em going..

I'm in teh middle of the state, I want something cool to look at, maybe eat some eggs, now after all ther great stuff maybe spicy bread and beutter pickled eggs, (do chickens lay those) and maybe eat some extra birds too.. What would you sugest I get?

Took 5 1/2 doz eggs to our daughter tonight..should last her about two weeks. Resisting the temptation to hatch any more till I see what comes out of Carl's hatcher tomorrow.

(Of course still have the 14 Cochin eggs from Iowa going in the incubator).

Checked in on the henhouse tonight to see if everyone was inside and okay with all the changes.
The broodies finally settled down in their hanging cages.
Lucie and her babies were settled two feet from heat lamp nestled in some clean hay.
Quiver looks less stressed. Terra was snuggled next to Mae, one of the Delawares.
Fred and Ginger are on the roost, purrchirping.
MJ's roo is on the roost between the two CWs under a 60 watt bulb lamp. He cocked one eye at meas if to tell me to go away.
All is right with the world.

Put some arucanas, couple of banty cochins and a few red pyles in the bator today! this will be my first "artificial" hatch! I am used to just letting the hens do the work but no one wants to be broody right now. If all goes well my little flock will be growing!
