So the Cochin roo was not as busy as I was hoping. Going to have to AI then. Then I can see helping to fill a tray....You big enabler you!

I love the Rosecombs. My Singlecombed have had a little freeze damage even with the vaseline treatment...especially on the Minorcas. The hen Lucie is raising a Minorca/CW cross and it is already twice the size of the SLW chick.

The cochin may have been trying to do his job but the wyandotte definetly stepped up the game.. there are some that ae certianly from the cochin but most are Dotte or Dotte x with rosecombs, and many show teh distinct columbian chick pattern.
You are going to have some very nice blue birds though..

I have 10 trays to the incubator, each can hold a max of 180 eggs... I used to fill 2 trays a week. and never used more than 6 trays so always had 4 empty trays. If this group could collectively fill both my incubators I think it would be inetresting to see for once. But that would be 3600 eggs. Good luck without a collective effort.

Glad to hear there are going to be some Blues. The Blue Wyandotte hen was bred by both the Cochin and the CW...so that will have to grow a little.

One has 460 total along with 6 adult pairs for $50 & the other has over 800 different sized Dubia along with 8 adult pairs for $75. I don't want to have to wait 8 months like you had to and after researching how good they are for animals? I'm way sold on them! Another plus is I just finally actually kept track the last few wks on how much my chickens (& 3 turkeys) ate and it's half what I thought they were eating. I love the idea of feeding them these Dubia for their protien. The Hissers will take longer to get going but those are my favorites as far as how they look. I do love bugs anyway. Bugs & lizards & toads all those things females aren't supposed to like. I never got my Toad Garden made last year but I'm going to this year.

I don't want to have to wait 8 months like you had to and after researching how good they are for animals? I'm way sold on them! Have you seen the dubia thread? I have posted pics of some of the cool things I've caught the dubias doing like molting, exposing egg sacs (they look more like sticks though), mating etc....

If your main thing is a fast good start I'd do the almost double dubias for the extra $25, it sounds like the better "deal" and a faster start.

I thought the pic you posted of the hissers looked cool, I didn't research them much b/c of the climbing thing. I wanted my first feeder insects to be as escape proof as possible. Are the hissers live bearers too? How long until they are grown enough to reproduce? Do they eat the same as the dubias?

I have a secret that really helps keep the incubator and hatcher tuned up and ready for use... You ready for this one?
DONT TURN IT OFF.. Those Chicken Seeds need a good start, Na, I wanted some nice young Cock birds for 2012 shows so have not shut off this year, or the year before, or the year before, etc.

After seeing your set up I can see where not turning it off might be cost efficiant, as big as those units are you could probable be heating your house with them while hatching eggs.

She ask $3 for reg & $4 for fancy-- as far as fancy goes some we don't have as many of so I never know what we will get until it hatches, should have slate, buff dundotte, brown, chocolate, bronze, royal purple, violet, sky blue & maybe coral blue-- but last yr I only managed 3 coral blue & a few buff dundotte, so I don't know what this yr will be. Plus we have the normal white, pearl & lavender. I am guessing she will want to add even more colors to our flock this yr. originally dh said she could only have 60 birds total, but he let her pass 60 long time ago. She loves them & takes care of them so we do our best to encourage her.

I would be interested in getting about 25 or so if your daughter hatches that many at a time, if not fewer will be great. My folks will be interested in anything except the whites. They have 100 white leghorns for egg production. My dad doesn't care but Mom says she would rather have a little color in the garden. All the chickens are kept in a large henhouse and run, but the guineas free range, and for some reason the white ones seem to have a higher degree of predation out there (Oklahoma Panhandle).

Okay, You and I are definitely going to have to meet and discuss our family history! I started a bug collection when I was 8. My mother was a science teacher so toads, snakes, lizards were a way of life growing up.

Looks like I've got two Dark Cornish and two Light Sussex in the hatcher so far. This is a small group, so I'm pretty sure any stragglers will be out of their shells by tomorrow. I've got the first brooder of the season heated and waiting. I'll post some pictures tomorrow when they are all dry and fluffy.

Beekeeping class was great. I picked out my gloves, helmet, veil, and hive tool. I also brought home my frame pieces and hive body pieces. I need to do a little prep work on the frame pieces this week so that they can be assembled with the help of our instructor. He's got some special tools that are guaranteed to make the job easy. We'll be using wood glue on most of the parts that require assembly, so I'm content to wait.
