Carla was doing the plasticulture program, last yr was there last yr. there are not alot of regulations for veggies, unless you want to work on being certified. You can even sell straight to local schools without any special certifications (farm to school program). Rules come into play when you alter the fruit or veggie in any way. As long as you sale it how you picked it then it is all good. Try to cut it up & turn I into something else you have to be in a certified kitchen. I don't consider myself a rule breaker but hate lots of regs. Selling @ Oklahomafood.coop will bring premium prices but lots of rules & origination skills would be a must. Eggs bring $4 a dz or more.
Cowboy- Hopefully your county ext agent can let you know if there are any local regulations. If they aren't helpful try the noble foundation. It's alot of information & can make your head spin! Caddo & Comanche county are both having their farmers market producer meetings this month-- to set the rules for this yrs markets. May want to check & see if your county has market meetings.

Always assume they have worms. If their feet have ever touched dirt, they've been exposed to worms & it's nothing to fool around with. There's no real way to tell except by having a vet do a fecal. I worm & re-worm everyone while they're in quarantine. You can use Safeguard paste or Valbazen, Safeguard's a ton easier to find. A 1/2" ribbon to each bird and repeat 10 days later. Also-there's a 99% chance they've got lice also. It's common like fleas on dogs. You can use 5 drops of Ivomec Eprinex or Frontline (like for dogs) for that and it'll take care of it for months. The people who swear their birds don't have lice, mites or worms are the ones who've either treated them for it or didn't check well enough to see them. DE does *not work to get rid of lice or mites. At most it *may* prevent them but usually not even that. I worked for a vet for a lot of years and I suppose that's why I'm so OCD about the whole debugging/deworming thing.

If you have a microscope you can do a fecal exam yourself. Go to Langston University's website and the procedure is all layed out for you. Of course it is info for goats but hey worms are worms and basically you just clean the eggs out of the feces and then count them.

Now with Ivermec be sure that you don't get the spot-on type for cattle.Up around Miami Ok. years ago at a feedlot they used the spot-on like a drench and killed 2 pens of bulls that were over 1000 pounds. Different applications have different strenghts. And be careful about getting it on yourself too, some people don't react well to being wormed. Collie type dogs should also not be wormed with Ivermec, there is something about them that lets the wormer go to their brain and cause a fatal reaction.

I totally agree about the DE. Even as it is marketed it states that it is not effective when wet. So when do you see a chicken pass a totally dry poop? If there is moisture in the intestinal tract it has to ruin the effectiveness of the DE.

I was over on the meat bird threads and read some stuff that got me thinking. Where is a good place to look up regs on things like indivuals (like myself) butchering and selling poultry or eggs to people. Would even look further and find regs on selling vegies grown on farm etc. Anyone know some of this or where to look for it. Thanks

Hopefully this link will work
