***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Morning!

The new brooder is working well. One chick jumped onto my hand and ran up my arm when I reached in for the empty food dish. I'm going to see about buying some lightweight chain today so that I can adjust each lamp as needed.

Robin - I have just enough time to run out to the barn and take a picture of the white silkie roo before church. Be back in a minute. Okay. I'm back. Here's the photo.

You know it's been a bad night when the scent of roadkill skunk can honestly be viewed as a pleasant distraction.

ewwww.... but yeah.... that would define what your nite was like

Coral, he looks much happier being able to stand up!! i don't understand sales where people stuff their birds in tiny cages....

We must be headed for a bad skunk summer. I've got one in a live trap today. That makes two in one week. I had my camera out and snapped a photo as Cass went to investigate. She got sprayed in the face recently. This time she was more careful. She looks like a cutout. I guess my flash overexposed her white fur.

Morning!

Okay so here is my least favorite thing about getting older. I can not sleep in anymore. Doesn't matter if I go to sleep at 10 pm or 4 am I still can not sleep after 9 am. This sucks!

Think I am going to go wash some fluffy chickens.

And all this time I did not think cats were capable of learning

When we first moved here we killed 7 skunks 7 opossums and a coon in about the first month. Havent been plagued with any since (knock on wood) I did near shoot niebors dog yesterday for running around chicken pens. If he doesnt fix the problem today I will. I hate destroying animals, but I hate more losing chickens. I think on skunks most of the time if you get one, you will get more. They seem to travel as familys.

Well I haven't been all weekend so Hi everyone~ Lots of fun reading & catching up! DD is good at her show. It was a late one & Metzford was right it was after midnight when we got home. I don't care for Friday night shows, the hens don't want to stand on the table & show! I got another tray of seeds planted & set in the window. Had a propane leek yesterday & lost it all, sure hoping the guy comes today to fix it.....he would of been here yesterday but had a family emergency.......I really need a shower.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions of using mini blinds for markers, if only I had some old one's! I guess the next time I see someone throwing some out I will snatch them. The plastic knifes worked great. I got out & cleaned up in the garden yesterday, still to wet to do anything else. I really hate that!

It was really a nice night at the auction. Scored a big beautiful pair of LF black cochins.
Did telling Scoots ahead of time that he just needed to write your bidder number on the cage before the auction started - help or hurt the price you had to pay for them? Sometimes, other buyers back off when they know you aren't going to stop bidding until you own the bird, other times they decide that you aren't going to get them cheap.

sounds like a VERY bad night.

Hope the rest of the week is much better.

Well been back from the auction for a while but decided to watch Zombieland. I love that movie. Rule #32 Enjoy the little Things and Rule #2 Double Tap!

It was really a nice night at the auction. Scored a big beautiful pair of LF black cochins. Of course this means, once again a revamp of the genetic charts. Holy cow it makes my ears bleed trying to get this chart figured out. Just so everyone knows I am going to set up two pure breed pens. One for LF cochins and the other for ameraucanas. These offspring are going to be for sale to hopefully off set the feed bill for the summer and maybe into the fall as well. Also, I will be selling the culls from my breeding program as well. Sorry there is no way I can kill the chicks, just isn't going to happen, folks.

Think I am going to head to bed. Hope everyone has a good "morning" as it is after midnight.

You probably would have paid a little more for them if I had been there. Or should I say that I would have paid a lot more for them.. Those were some good looking birds.

I think selling healthy chicken culls is a good thing. I do understand not selling them if you are a serious breeder that breeds to improve show lines. Someone who is into showing would be hurting theirselves when they offered up birds of any kind to others.
With my seedlings I feed the culls to my birds-- they are very happy with the seeds that don't grow as fast or as strong.
Ksane I just wanted to mentioned I think you are showing GREAT self control in sticking to one type of chicken! I told DDs they could each pick one kind of bird to focus on, but then that didn't leave any birds for my sisters kids (who usually stay here every weekend since she has work). So bird types multiplied slowly.
However-- the EE can come in so many colors & patterns that they seem to be the preferred bird of DD.
Surely you're joking! I 1st seriously got into owning chickens 9 months ago and I have about 50 birds. I don't think that's much self control lol My tiny bit of self control only comes from knowing I can't hatch any that I'm not willing to keep since it breaks my heart to part with them.

lol! Never stand in the way of a woman wanting particular birds at an auction, Black Cochins are beautiful and the LF blacks are just striking.

Kass, lol! Not sure I want to know the details that led to the statement about the roadkill-haha
Poco, that's one purdy Silkie boy. I had 3 white Silkie boys out of the hatchery batch last year, I lost 2 during the e. coli nightmare so now I only have the *one white Silkie boy so he's special. He's the one that my big Faverolles boy is gracious enough to let live with him. I think they have some sort of a man-crush going on with each other, they snuggle up together at night to sleep.
Robin, surely you're taking the boy Poco has??? You know you want to!
