chickens will kill Bermuda grass - and eat the runners as they try to come through the chain link fence to repopulate the chicken yard.

Put the chickens on the Bermuda grass that you want gone. It will take a few weeks, but it will be gone from the place the chickens had access to.
It's funny that the ducks and geese and a few chickens are somewhat free range and have access to the grass but it don't kill any of it out it just gets thicker and is very nice low groomed plush lawn in those areas, nothing survives in the pens though where the pressure is constant

My Grandmother kept what she called a dirt yard she wouldn't allow any grass or weeds to grow they had natural flagstones for paths to keep out of the mud when it was wet outside and since she lived in far southeast OK they always had plenty of rain

Actually, if you just put the boiled eggs directly in the pickled beet juice they will likely develop a good flavor and turn pink on the outside and down into the white just a little, without the need to add additional spices - if you like the pickled beet flavor. All this talk of pickled beets and boiled eggs caused me to put a jar of pickled beets into the frig this morning and I am going to boil the few quail eggs we get and see how they taste once the shell is dissolved in vinegar and they are left to set in the beet juice for awhile.

That's what I thought when I started my chicken garden idea, well it's been a year and I'm still digging out runner grass roots by the large black trash containers. (like the 30 gallon size). Everytime I go into the garden and dig out runner grass I threaten them w/ the freezer, but so far it hasn't done any good.

The runner grass I'm digging out now isn't the chickens fault though, it is a bed I'm making outside of the coop run garden.

Today while out checking on all the chickens I found a new face peeking out from under the pile of broodies. I took it and put it in with the other two newly hatched ones. The hen scooped it right up and it caring for it. I thought that would be the best thing for it rather than possibly getting trampled to death with all the other birds. Plus, with the other chicks it will have access to medicated chick feed and a waterer that it can reach without drowning.

The newest one is the one in front. It's whiter than the other two. Does anyone know what that means? Will it be white? I thought that yellow chicks turned white anyway, but this one is already white. All three of these are from the smooth feathered Serama bunch. They're so tiny and cute!

Cool! I have a roo that was pure white as a chick. He is a Black Mottled/Mille Fleur cross. He look like a Columbian with a little beige now. His pin feathers showed up gray when he was just a few days old. I need to post his pic.
When I found the chick under his Mom I was so shocked that I scooped him up and ran over to Jack's to show him and ask if that was normal. Unfortunately the chick doesn't have the best type so I won't breed him but cant seem to let him go.
Please show us how his/her color developes.

LOL well we go to early service so church service is at 8:45 and we are out of sunday school by 10:30 and home by 11:15. We started on the coops while our oldest son came in and made lunch. Plus we had handy little errond boys ages 7 and 9 (you know they still find going and getting this and that fun). Now the 14 year old boy his help was marginal for a while until he remembered that he sketched pictures of the nesting boxes that sold last night in Newcastle. Then he got some old partical board out and made a trial one. He did pretty darn good. So now he wants to go buy some plywood out of his money to make them to sell. Does anyone think they will sell? He is thinking craigslist to sell them. I don't think he would break even with auctions.

Then not to mention we ditched evening church, they were having a chilli cook off which I hated to miss but we have waited a week to get anything done on these coops. I can't wait for it to all be finished so I can share pics. Of course we have already "outgrown" what we are building. Now we are building different quarentine coops and making a batcholer pen. Then I want to redo our brooders in the feed house. Always a list of things to do, lol.
It was nice to meet you at the auction. Hope you get some good Gold Salmon Marans chicks. The are fun to hatch, come in all kinds of colors. Some are solid chocolate brown as chicks!

Thanks for posting about the newcastle sale michael that is a REAL bad pic of me! But its all good. Sad that there won't be a Newcastle sale first Saturday of the month. We will for sure make the next Blanchard sale.
Birds are staying penned up today, they don care for playing in this wind. I am going to play in the dirt & with my plants in the hoop house. Then organize my fabric stash. It will be like Christmas. I haven't seen any fabric since I packed it up last April.
Hope everyone enjoys the windy holiday!

If you think the Bermuda is bad come see my fescue. It is so thick the mower chokes up even in the short grass. The guy preparing my garden plot is worried if it will even disappear after he disc it & rakes it. Stuff is insanely thick! Looks pretty if you are wanting a manicured lawn- DH would have killed for the fescue to thrive in our yard in town the way it does here. Of course in town we had Bermuda! We have Johnson grass in our hay pasture but for some reason it doesn't come past the pasture fence, not going to complain though. I would have to mow it twice a wk!

"Chicken Moat" question:
Last week I had the opportunity to meet Ke_ben's sister (our Nevada Okie) and her husband had some questions about the width of a chicken moat. I had not previously understood that the purpose of a moat was to have a run of a width that hawks - with their long wing spans - could not swoop down to get the chickens. My question : what width of a chicken run would prevent a hawk from flying down to snatch a chicken?

Good Morning everyone! Getting ready to take Jared to the dentist. Laying the groundwork for braces today.
I hope to get a post out soon with some tentative ideas for POOPS.
I appreciate everyone who has shown an eagerness to help. I am sure we will need it all as we get closer.
