***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Thought I'd share some good news with you'al, with Poultry and Bees patience and willingness to answer questions, she helped us through a process.

We got our aviary facilities inspected by an Okmulgee County Game Warden, went to OKC today to turn all the paperwork, and now have our "Commercial Wildlife Breeder's License" through Oklahoma's Dept of Wildlife and Conservation. We will start building our flocks of multiple native upland game bird species starting with quail and pheasants, hoping at some point to get into chukars and grouse as well.

On Sunday we go through our initial NPIP cert...so every bird has to be tested over 4 months...not looking forward to that...close to 150 birds here meet that criteria. (so glad they don't do chicks)

Anyway, just wanted to share and give a big thanks to Maribeth!

Congratulations on obtaining your Commercial Wildlife Breeder's License!

Good luck with the NPIP testing this weekend., It really isn't too much of a hassle if you have your birds caged ahead of time, so you aren't trying to chase them around a huge poultry yard. I just leave mine locked in the coop until the tester arrives, then go into the coop and bring out 2 or three chickens at a time for testing. I have a cage available to put the tested birds into, until we know they are clean, then I release them to free range. The peacocks and turkeys are always the biggest challenge for me, just because they can beat you up with their wings while you are trying to restrain them for testing. Now is a good time of year to test the peacocks, before all the tail feathers are in full display. I usually end up with a handful of wing feathers on both the turkeys and peacocks. I wonder if a defense mechanism allows them to essentially shed their feathers to avoid capture.

Nana have you ever cooked the pea tendrils? Was reading a review the other day saying they are amazing. Think that is what I may try, I seem to be awful @ growing peas. Think the heat kills them before I get to harvest them. I am going to plant some this fall-- not sure if I will get any in the ground this spring. Just too many other things that need to be done first (like order stuff to eliminate my grasshoppers as they start to moult).

I plant Sugar Snap peas and they make few tendrils...so never cooked any. I use NoLo bait for grasshoppers.

Hey ya'll! I'm new to the BYC, having just purchased 2 silkies recently. Unfortunately, one died today and I need someone to keep my other girl company. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'd be willing to purchase another silkie or other compatible breed. I live in Yukon. Thanks!

Spent the day fluffing hay, and cleaning pens and moving chicks and birds around.
Separated the Columbian Wyandottes and the Blue Wyandotte into a separate outdoor pen to keep the eggs pure. Moved 20 slick leg chicks chicks to the floor pen in the hen house with a brooder light...they sure are enjoying the extra space and are flitting and jumping like crazy. Same thing going on in the 6 x 2 foot tub...left 18 in there..mostly feather leg..Cochins and Cochin xs
Have Delilah in an air cage to break her broody mood.
A Buff Minorca is really growlly..didn't think they go broody often so she is on broody watch..about pecked my arm off when I was gathering eggs....and she didn't have an egg yet.

MJ..you can come anytime Sunday. We will be home.

Good to see you on the thread Bill sounds like a busy time testing the birds LOL

I'm up late or is this early? At this point I may just make coffee LOL I have made some progress cleaning the house up a bit it's dark outside and the thermometer says it's 29 degrees outside kind of a reminder that it's still winter just have to stay up all night lately to really feel it.

28 degrees here this morning. As for being up early or late......... I am at a loss on that one. Got up at 3am........ on my day off, just ain't right. So I guess early or late is moot point for some of us. Insomnia sucks, have had it for years and years, some night are good ( 4 -6 hours of sleep) some not so good ( a couple hours ). Prescription meds and all for the insomnia, guess I could blame it on getting older ? Best reason I can think of, in my younger/wilder days I had better things to do than sleep !

So on a more upbeat note, saw the tom turkey breeding the hens yesterday afternoon, the sure look rough with their mating. Does anyone know when the hens will start laying since they have started mating?

I have my 2nd batch of eggs in the incubator. Probley my last incbation for a while. The hens are laying fairly well, been getting 12 to 20 eggs a day the past week or so.
So if anyone is going to be in the Durant area on a monday thru thursday, of in the madill area on a friday thru sunday and want some welsummer or welsummer x easter egger or easter egger eggs to hatch let me know ahead of time and I will save some on the egg turner .
The welsummer x easter eggers that I hatched out last summer started laying in January, the eggs have ranged from pink, pink with spots, green, green with spots, light blue, and then am still getting blue eggs from the easter egger girls along with the wellie eggs.

Finaly got the Alpha (de throned) Rooster, Cockrel and Tom Turkey situation fixed.
Let the Cockrel out of his confinement yesterday, the Cockrel promptly whooped the Roosters tail feathers all over the chicken yard and back yard in less than 5 minutes of being let out, took care of several hens and was ready to fight again. Sad, sad day for BB the used to be Alpha rooster, his defense was to run behind me and try to hide. Now have the boys seperated into their own areas with their own hens.
The turkey tom and turkey hens are now in their own fenced area away from the chickens. And have started mating, so guess they think it is spring time and time for poults.
