Morning!

Both my live traps are sprung, and the old eggs I used for bait are smashed into tiny pieces inside the traps. Looks like something wanted them but knew better than to go inside for them. I doubt it got much of a taste. There are dried egg insides glued to the bottom of each trap. There is also a lot of digging around the sides of both traps. I'm thinking this was the work of yet another skunk. How many skunks can live on one little farm? They need to move on.

Robin - How is the little chick doing? I asked about the medicated feed because I usually put layer and medicated chick starter in with my broodies after their little ones hatch. The chicks eat what they can, and momma eats a little of both. Since she's not laying while she's tending chicks, I've not seen a problem with her having a little bit of chick starter. If anyone has different experience, please post. I'd like to know if I should change the way I'm feeding my broody moms after they have babies.

Would be fun to go to one of the shows. Where do I find out when and where they are? I don't expect I'll ever be a big breeder or even have over a dozen birds at any time, but always looking for something new to do. I usually spend most of my free time with the horses, I'll be riding today after the chores are done.

Did I mention that there are enablers in this group who will go to great lengths to assist unsuspecting folks in the acquisition of more poultry than they ever dreamed possible to house and feed?

Anybody catch the posting on CL were somebody drove 50 miles to the Blanchard Auction with 115 birds and there was no auction. They were just a little mad. I have a rule that I always call or check out BYC, or CL to make sure that it is happening. Even though I live this close to both Blanchard and Newcastle, gas and time is precious nowadays.

I usually put layer and medicated chick starter in with my broodies after their little ones hatch. The chicks eat what they can, and momma eats a little of both. Since she's not laying while she's tending chicks, I've not seen a problem with her having a little bit of chick starter. If anyone has different experience, please post. I do the same thing. I've had hens start laying 2 - 3 weeks after hatch. The hens cluck up the chicks to the feed, but I see the hens taking the bigger layer pellets. Since I don't free range the hens with chicks, I provide lots of greens and clipped grass for the moms to eat and teach the little ones to eat.

Fortunately we haven't seen nor smelled skunk yet unless it's on the highway. Haven't seen evidence of the racoons or possom yet either. I usually trap a few each spring in the garden. We did see 5 coyotes trailing acrosss the pasture yesterday morning. Guns are at the ready.

Sooner, was it you or Poco who had the Double Laced Barnevelder? I'm thinking of buying 6 eggs. I remember that picture one of you posted and that was a gorgeous bird. Reminded me of my Dark Cornish except on a regular sized chicken.

Ok dumb question time: Is it normal for typically docile roosters to attack you? Our Buff Orphington rooster has been the model of laid back. He and his gal are in our "big kid" pen (where we keep older chicks until they start laying or crowing). He is so good with the babies you would think he hatched them himself. Never given me a lick of trouble ever. He even lets me pet him. But this morning I went out to feed chicks before church and he pecked at my shoe then tried to fly up in my face three times. I finally hit him with the pan I had in my hand because he was getting to close to my face for comfort. Now is this typical? I am going to put him and his girlfriend in a coop by themselves and see if this helps. But I will not be letting the kids feed or water in that coop until I figure out if this is just his true nature coming out or if he is just feeling frisky because it is spring.
