out of the 3 sick hens, 2 are improving, my ee is still just fading on me, what can i feed her to build up her strength? so far she has turned down scrambled eggs, crumbles, nothing interests her...

Ya'll are the best, I just love reading along but it has been really hard to keep up lately. I have been having to keep a window open to the thread and read up when I can lately..so I am not lurking 24/7...I just keep the window open 24/7! I am going to have to get out and meet some of you good folks, ya'll are so funny.

If you are looking for inexpensive building materials I would not fail to check in with Habitat for Humanity Restores on a regular basis. I generally pay about 10% of retail or less....best recent bargain was 3 dollars for a giant roll of welded wire. I would recommend just going weekly or so as the inventory changes so very much. Hardware is such a sneaky little coop expense and they usually have tons of handles and hinges and that stuff usually is 50 cents or 25 cents....it's like the thrift store for building stuff.

I also succumbed to the Atwoods Banty chick bin, I feel much better knowing that I am not the only one...and I am so glad you said that about them being so veeeery tiny like quail. I was thinking they looked tinier than ever too! Thus me NEEDING to bring 4 home from that bin.

in other chicken math news...I might have succumbed to that banty bin before say about 6 or 7 months ago?

Would anyone be interested in some free roosters? I have a darling banty partridge cochin rooster, and a Mille Fleur D'Uccle that have just started crowing....I would send them to auction but I'd rather just find them a good home. Any takers? I live in Norman so you could hit the Habitat store and score a couple of free roosters in one trip!

Well darn, Nathanael's little hen we bought down in Maud passed away this morning while we were at church. She was fine this morning when I went to feed. She has been in the baby coop where she has loved being with the little chicks. We thought she was old when he got her and she had mites something fierce. We got those taken care of and she perked right up. But this morning without any warning she died. I hate this part for my kids. But, It is all part of having pets and he was prepared for it since we realized she was an older bird. Nathanael said he is going to have to find a young hen this time that will put up with his rooster, lol. His hen Raven didn't appreciate his roosters advances lol.

Here is a picture of Nathanael and his little rooster. This rooster thinks he is a little boy instead of a bird.

Our sick rooster is getting better with B12 liquid given one drop in the morning and one in the evening. He is eating medicated chick starter right now. I didn't give him any hope on Monday but today he is taking 5-6 steps around the coop and then laying down to rest and then getting back up. I know he is only at about 40% strength right now but he is improving.

oooo thanks I'm about to head out the door, but this will give me an excuse to not work on the house or shed tonight!

Thanks for posting the show pictures! I sure wish I could have gone. I think it would have been a great opportunity to mingle and see some really nice chickens.

Joe - You must be running on no sleep at all. How do you do it? I think I need at least six hours a night or I'm a cranky, cranky, cranky person. Will there be a sale at Coweta this month?

Coyotes are going to be a problem this season. We have seen a few at mid day by the east pond. I think the mild winter is going to tax us in many ways this year. They haven't bothered any of the calves yet. I hope there are enough bunnies and possums out there to keep them from getting too hungry. Skunks must have had a productive winter as well. My live traps have been occupied at least once a week by stinky visitors. I'm really tired or skunks. I'd rather catch possums. Possums don't spray gallons of yuck when you pick up the trap.

I'm off to mass with two laying hens in a travel cage in my truck. The hens are for a family at church. They lost a hen recently, so I'm replacing her with the choice of one or both. I think they have room for two. They have a big family, and I'm guessing they crack 10 to 12 eggs when they cook eggs for breakfast each morning. I should start a poll: Have You Ever Taken Your Chickens to Church?

I am pretty well run doun and don't have the stringth to work on the new breeder house today

That's what I was wondering about. The demos online and the reviews make it sound like it'll fall apart without a true floor, but I don't know what I'd use given the circumstances.

Cathie, (okieridge) I moved 13 of teh eggs to teh hatcher, they should be ready for pick-up wednesday evening.
NanaKat, I moved all of your eggs to the hatcher as well. all 6 OE eggs are looking good they will also be ready for pick-up wednesday evening.
