Robin I can tell you that I wasn't able to find Rooster Booster (same thing) at any of the farm stores so what I am leading to is either MFA or WAlmart is your choices. MFA wasn't open on the day that I needed it so not sure they carry it either.

Another good suppliment to have on hand is Red Cell. It comes in gallon or quart jugs and is with the horse supplies. Since it is high in Iron it just takes a couple of drops a day for a chicken.

Our Atwoods here has the Rooster Booster. Manna Pro has a good suppliment out for poultry as well but man is it high. In the big bags it's around 35 or 40 dollars a bag. Good stuff though and we have raised a lot of calves on it.

That was the first thing I did was grab him and feel all over his legs. They both appear fine, he just holds himself funny when he stands and he acts like he doesn't want to stand a lot, but like I said reach that arm in there and he runs just fine. I'm using a cage with cardboard as a brooder, but I cover the floor of it with towels, so the only time it would be a slipping issue is when I'm changing towels.

Haha, I hope he's just a little on the "special" side. He's crested. I thought it would be funny having a fuzzy topped duck around.

Mostly military surplus but they often have tractors and other equipment. Plus often times at Ft. Sill there are little buildings and containers that could be rebuilt into coops. The mosquito netting and the half-shelter tents make wonderful shade cloths.

There is a sweet Farmall Cub on Govdeals but it is in Ct. There are other tractors closer though. And Bill you can buy a cheap beater truck for your dogs to drive too!

Really enjoyed the Pryor show yesterday, and had some time to actually VISIT with several of the BYC people, as well as silkie friends. Great to meet several new friends also. Ken did his usual good job with everything and stayed calm and collected even in the face of all the details and pesky people (me included) he has to deal with. Thought the judge did a really good job, plus he was friendly and helpful. I loved the way the show was set up this year! silkies and show cages were right inside the same door, so I could place my chair and had to walk only a few feet to both! My knee replacements are doing well but still painful, so that helped me hugely! Not having to walk back and forth so much gave me much more time to visit. I'm so slow moving, being old and decrepit, but was determined not to be the last one out this year. Almost messed that up anyway--there's always a last minute check to see if I've left anything and to say the last goodbyes!

Sure wish I could have been there to see you Betsy. Miss you bunches!

Hadn't thought much of that, they've got a run about hm... 50x15? ish probably longer than that, I haven't measured it. So I wasn't really thinking of them being in it during the summer.


Good idea about the panel. What did you use for the floor on yours?


oooo thanks I'm about to head out the door, but this will give me an excuse to not work on the house or shed tonight!

I mount a fan in front of the open panel that keeps the heat down and also put a reflective tarp over the roof that helps deflect a lot of the sunlight.
As for the floor mine sits on the ground right now and has for several years. I line the inside with a large tarp, which makes clean-up fairly easy. Just roll tarp up with all the old litter and poop drag it out to the composter. I have a back-up tarp so one is clean and dry and ready to go.

I'm worried about the heat in the chicken sauna this summer. It has air vents and I keep the door open during the day. We will see what happens I guess.

Put a fan in there and maybe a window.

When I get finished cutting trucks here I will be more trailer poor then I am now. But I may be convinced to part with one later on.

I've got a big Victor production torch to cut scrap with but lately I have been using a Sawzall with a metal cutting blade in it. That big Victor consumes about $50.00 worth of gas a day vs. about three dollars for a blade.

And if you don't already have a Sawzall you should look into getting one as much remodeling and building as you do. I would bet that in less then 5 minutes you could have a very good sized chunk cut out of the side of your house with it. Nails, wiring and the rest. LOL

I did originally see the tractor we bought on criagslist. The guy actually only lived 10 min or so from us so it worked well. DH has managed to find alot of projects today that he really needed to use the tractor

We did use a metal shed that had brooders set up last June & it would get over 100 with the doors open. The shed is completely shaded & we would hose it down to help cool it off. One quick easy thing we have for our birds is cattle panel hoop houses. Google & you can see lots of DIY plans. Think cost about $200 if you use all new supplies. We also add wheels from atwoods to the bottoms & move them about every 3-4 days. During the winter we added more tarps to cover the sides the whole way down. This wk I found tarps in the hardware isle @ Walmart clearance $4 for 8x10- so I snatched them all up. I have also seen lots of coops from pallets, there is even a plan online for pallet coops. I know my DH would rather build a coop from scratch then put one of those metal sheds together! With that being said we have 2 of those metal sheds @ our rent houses that are 8-10yrs old. Only issue is the doors NEVER stay on. Our metal shed here @ the farm DH made a double door for it our of privacy fence panels. Works GREAT & only cost hardware.

Oops! Sorry. I candled eggs on Saturday. Of the 10 NH, 9 are forming well and one was clear. Quite a few wigglers were head-butting the shell from the inside when they saw the candling light. Both the OE were clear. One of the OE had a tiny, tiny hair-line crack that I didn't notice when I set the hatch, but it was visible when I candled. I'm wondering if USPS had an oopsie when handling the box. I know your rooster to hen ratio is good, so I'm thinking the trip was just too much for the three that didn't take. Shipping is such a gamble. I've had some hatches of shipped eggs as high as 90%, but I've had others in which only one of a dozen made it through lock down. You just can't know. I wish we could coat egg boxes with pixie dust so that drops or bumps couldn't hurt the eggs. I'll be sure to post pictures when these little German Fluff Nuggets spend their first day in the brooder. Thank you soooo much for sending the eggs. You'll have to let me know what I can bring for you to N.E.O.C.S.

Right now I am peeling eggs for a huge batch of egg salad.

The menu this week is egg salad and pasta with sauce and meatless meatballs. Yummy!

Right now I am peeling eggs for a huge batch of egg salad.

The baby on the left looks like spun gold with fluffy feet! What a beautiful color. If you have lots of eating eggs you might try The Queen's Quiche. I'll look for the recipe. I had it and lost it several times. I short cut most of the preparation when I make it, mostly because i don't have a butler, cook, or chef to boss around. I made it the last time our grand daughter stayed with us, and she was impressed that it wasn't mushy. I'm going to go find the recipe. It's already bugging me.
