***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Today one of my brown guinea hens kept nesting. She was working hard on making the perfect spot. Still didn't find any eggs, but I am thinking we MUST be close!
Did collect a egg for the peahen today, it will go in the incubator later this wk.
We got up about a forth of our deer netting for the garden. The wind was fighting us, but we managed. My hope is the netting & the dogs will help deter the critters from the garden.
Hope everybody had a great weekend! Looking forward to Blanchard sale next wk. We will bring a couple dz chicks & maybe some brandywine tomato plants if the weather forecast is still looking warm.

On calves with a knucke foot I have a question, is it good or not when they begin to walk on the tip on the hoof or not ? He has been getting the knuckled foot leg streched several times a day, has started to look like his is walking on his tippy toes some.

Oh my, look at that stink eye. Finally called it quits sometime after 3am, but caught up on today's posts. Kids had a shooting meet today and then had to get stuff ready for one going to camp tomorrow.


I meant a poultry nipple bucket waterer thingy for POOPs. No idea what the technical name is. I bought a bunch of poultry nipples and between those and poultry cups, they've replaced everything else we use. Even have chicks using them in the brooder. If I place the nipples just right, it can be used with a cookie tin heater on top of a cinder block for the winter.

Don't know if it's feasible to bring my kids to POOPs. If I can get a carpool going from up here, there just won't be room. Especially if we want to have room to bring stuff home.


Ya know, if you lose power, you could switch to the same type of portable unit Betsy's using to brood. Shove all the eggs in your shirt and slowly rock back and forth til the power is back on.

Wow! Lots of activity on the thread today. I'm moving babies from the basement brooders to the barn tomorrow. I've got the metal brooder I bought at Coweta last Friday all cleaned out and warmed up. It's ancient, but it seems to work well. I think it will comfortably hold 100 babies until they are about two weeks old. I'll be testing that theory with 50 chicks tomorrow. I may have to revise my numbers once the little ones are actually moved in.

Hope the weather holds. I've got three pear trees to plant tomorrow. They have little buds on them already, so I'm late in getting them in the ground. Have a good evening. This camper is too tired to type any more.

to the newbies! I'm a newbie too, and this is the greatest bunch to listen to. I'm sure learning a lot and laughing a lot too!

Nocityboy, I was laughing so loud at that the dogs looked at me funny... And I'm here by myself!

Was at a friends last year who has a neighbor with peafowl that are always wandering into their yard. I heard the "HELP" call and asked my friend what on earth was going on outside. She laughed and told me the first time she heard it was in the middle of the night and she woke her husband up to go out and see who needed help.

I want some peafowl. I'd love to hatch some eggs out. I discussed that with my daughters last night. I live in the country. Not many neighbors. But unfortantly they sold the field accross from my house. Now we are going to have a housing edition built there. Really sad about that. I thought if I did get some peafowl and the buyers heard them maybe they wouldn't want to live there. ....My birds where here first. Ha-ha. But that's just wishful thinking. I was really enjoying not having to see people out here.

I hear ya.. my next door neighbor moved last year and they also have 220 acres across the road. Lots of woods, several ponds, cattle, horses... We're a little uphill from it and it's a wonderful sight first thing in the morning on the front porch with our coffee. It's for sale.... I'm skeered....

then evidently his jobs are all done for the day, you should pay attention to how he gets HIS work done so mabey you could get yours done in a timely fashion also!!!!!

I was wondering the same thing about the wheelbarrows and am anxiously waiting for the secret.

And... I have a hen that crows. One of the old chickens looks like a hen, but it has some serious spurs. Then last spring it started crowing. Well it was a pitiful sounding crow and I went out to see who it was and saw that hen doing her best to crow. She did that for months and then just as suddenly, quit. Until last week. I only heard her crowing one day so far. Strange thing is that we have a roo that crows all the time. ????

I spent most of the day rearranging the coop and run. My new girls are 6 weeks old now and they got their first taste of the outdoors after being shut in the coop for a week. I put up a fence divider between the old chickens and the new girls and opened the door. They were so funny! They went nuts on the grass, pecked in the dirt, and got scared by the wind and kept running behind the open door which acted as a wind block. Then I removed the temporary roof on the brooder area, and added a ramp to the shelf which propped up the temp roof. Then I added another roosting pole at the higher level. They had a blast! I never knew chickens played like that. Then again, I've never had young'uns before either. I ended up bringing a bench into the run so I could hang out and watch them. The cats, dogs, and even the horses were looking at me like I'm crazy and they all wanted to know what I was doing in the chicken yard for so long. I can't wait till the younger chick is big enough to go out with the rest of them. Do chicks get lonely when they're caged by themselves?

On the black cat thing, I went out to smoke one day, middle of the day and watched a big black cat slink across a neighbors field...roughly a block long, I watched this cat. I can't say anything really stood out or registered as off until it got to his trailer. The thing was as high as his skirting. I was shocked. No way was I off on the color, open Kansas prairie, bright midday sun, it was a solid black cat and it was big. I even rubbed my eyes and looked again. Never heard about any loose exotic pets or escapees and believe me, I asked around. Not one person who lived in the area was surprised. I sure as heck was though.

That would be the optimal idea. They will start hatching Friday if all is well with them.

Went to the Newcastle auction. But I was lost and felt out of place so we left pretty quick. They had a gorgeous pair of Buff Op's I wanted and the Silkies. Oh my gosh!! But I didn't have a clue what to even do. lol But if anyone noticed, I was the one with the bright orange red hair. I know I stuck out like a sore thumb lol

Sorry we missed you. We were all really spread out, some of us were sitting near the front on the bleachers. Because it was kind of out of the way and we could see the birds better. The auction is not normally that hectic or you probably have easily find us. Hope you will come to Blanchard next Saturday. I will be fun.

Stupid is one of those relative terms. I am really good at writing but ignorant as all get out about electrical engineering. Of course people do dumb things sometimes and that does not necessarily make them stupid. If you do not believe me, let me introduce you to a couple of my exs.

I wasn't there tonight, sorry you didn't bump into any of the bycers. They would have steered you in the right direction & even pulled up a chair for you! Seriously if DD sees something she likes that I am not familiar with I always will ask someone how much should I expect to pay & they usually will even look over the birds with me to make sure they are good.
90% of the folks @ the auctions are pretty nice & will strike up a conversation with you about almost anything. Just look for the loudest chatty bunch next time. That would be the BYC table. Half the time we don't even know what is on the auction table since we are chatting so much!

I want to get a pea bird one of these days, just to jazz up the place a little. I love that call they do. Is that the peahen or peacock that makes that haunting jungle sound? Or is it both?

As my DD said when I moved to my place and first got peafowl. "Nothing says class like a peacock strutting round a trailer home".

Carl, I've been thinking about that comment you made about nobody who is serious about showing sells "show quality" hatching eggs, and it makes sense, even to somebody who doesn't show. Why would I give a leg up to my competition? In my boxing days, that would be like me saying when I throw my jab, it leaves me wide open to a left hook because I had a habit of dropping my right. Plenty of fighters figured that out on their own, so why help them out?

I got hit with enough of them until I finally stopped that painful habit, though.

I would guess somebody is selling eggs from their less-than-best, and keeping the best for themselves. Makes sense to me, anyway.

I finished up with hatching chicken eggs for a while , I think so, well maybe if I sit down and do some chicken math I may find out that I am note done after all, I have a bunch of meaties and 2 day old to 5 week old large fowl, but they don't count do they ? Then the pullets that are getting ready to lay don't count, broodies don't count either do they ? Hmm, I realy don't have but 15 chickens and a couple of roos, but the roosters dont' count either do they.

Nope roos don't count because they are not chickens. Don't you love chicken math. According to my calculations I only have 17 chickens. I think I need more. Especially those LF cochins, they are really cool! LOL

that all depends on what you call "quietish". they arent like roosters, they arent a constant noise, but, they can be very loud!

mostly i guess it depends on the neighbors. mine didnt mind the noise as long as the birds were penned up. if they got out it litterly got messy everywhere!

peafowl are nastier than turkeys or waterfowl.

most people like to see them, i almost always have people in my yard on weekends.

It depends on the type of breed of peafowl. My male is a pied Indian Blue and he only makes sad whinning sound. Don't know what that is all about. My hen actually sounds like a goose and has no trouble voicing her concerns and advice about my chicken/poultry raising skills.

Got the CWs in the new pen inside and moved the Spangled and the to CW pullets in as well.

Wouldn't it be great if we could get the extra unwanted roosters to be broodie. That would be a great survival skill roosters should learn. Huummm!!!!

She posted the secret, see above Ours quit over winter, but as soon as it warmed up she'd start up again. There was a neighbor caddy corner who could see slightly over our privacy fence due to the lay of the land. It was funny watching him crane his neck trying to see what was going on. That's why I built a 4 foot tall coop and run, just barely out of sight.


It's pouring here. Haven't turned on the news yet. I was hoping we'd somehow get missed so DH could cut down some trees tonight. Have to get those dead ones out of the way so I can plant the fruit trees.
