***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Our power has flickered a few times. Think the rain is suppose to last most of the day, so the birds & goats will be staying penned up. I keep thinking I should find something productive to do, but for now I am listening to the thunder.
Kids have school today & tomorrow, then we will be busy busy busy! They get every Friday off for the rest of the yr! It will be a nice change of pace. Weekends always seem to go by too fast here with all the projects we have going on! I am thankful for the rainy days! We have already mowed our grass more this yr than all of last yr! Huge improvement!

Morning all, it is soaking wet here. I must have the dumbest birds ever, went to feed and most were out in their yards soaking wet! My guineas were all out squaking at me but wouldn't go in thier coop building. Poor dumb birds. Lost a chick in the feed house, they have full run of the 10x10 building but I guess the thunder had them scared they all huddled in one corner and trampled one poor bird.

Well gotta take the oldest boy to take his written drivers test and pick up pine shavings from atwoods in all this wet stuff.

Hello Okies! I have been away again. My mom in TX had surgery, and I started a new work project that I have to drive a lot for, so am away from the computer. But I am back for now and looking forward to posting more - although I give up on trying to catch up!

All my little chicks are in the corner all together.... looking at me with that look of why did you let it rain? so for now they are all there in the corner giving me bad looks ...

The pair of turkeys dripping wet I piled into the coop yet again and bossy hen started chewing them out. ... I think they might stay this time..

Add me Monty! Just one...

I spent most of the day rearranging the coop and run. My new girls are 6 weeks old now and they got their first taste of the outdoors after being shut in the coop for a week. I put up a fence divider between the old chickens and the new girls and opened the door. They were so funny! They went nuts on the grass, pecked in the dirt, and got scared by the wind and kept running behind the open door which acted as a wind block. Then I removed the temporary roof on the brooder area, and added a ramp to the shelf which propped up the temp roof. Then I added another roosting pole at the higher level. They had a blast! I never knew chickens played like that. Then again, I've never had young'uns before either. I ended up bringing a bench into the run so I could hang out and watch them. The cats, dogs, and even the horses were looking at me like I'm crazy and they all wanted to know what I was doing in the chicken yard for so long. I can't wait till the younger chick is big enough to go out with the rest of them. Do chicks get lonely when they're caged by themselves?
That's what I love love love about baby chicks! I've raised animals my whole life but didn't have baby chicks til last year. I've never seen such comedy

I'm sure lone chicks do get lonely since chickens are social animals. Your best bet would be to put one of the others in with the lone chick for a week or so before you transfer it. Chicks are cute but they're not very smart and that way those 2 will think they grew up together and will at least have each other when you go to integrate them. A lone bird put into a flock has a sign on its back that says "Torment Me".
Morning! It's pouring here and for once the dogs decided I didn't need to be pushed out of bed and slept in with me. If I didn't have to feed the goats I'd probably stay in bed and enjoy my spring break lol. Sad thing is I have no clue where my daughter put my rain boots and its a nice big puddle going all the way to the barn.

Have any of you used the dry hatch method?? I decided to try that out. No water in the bator but my humidity is perfectly in the 30's.
Next time I hatch out eggs I'm buying a turner becase turning 62 eggs every day mulitple times is for the birds. haha
I've only used my Little Giant incubator twice. I got a 50% hatch with shipped LF Cochin eggs last summer with it using dry incubation. This last time I tried with just 4 eggs but did NOT use dry incubation. I wish I had. 1 mixed breed chick hatched, and I peeled the shell off another chick or it would've died like the other 2. I guess technically that's a 50% hatch rate. If I try again it's going to be dry incubation with my own eggs. I'm still undecided on buying a Brinsea. I hate to spend $130 and not get any better than a 50% hatch rate anyway.

I so know what you are talking about. Stupid birds are all standing out in the rain then look at me like it is my fault that it is raining.

Ksane I have the Brinsea Eco with the auto turner. The auto turner isn't needed, since the incubator is designed that you can turn the whole incubator when you walk by. The auto turned does a complete turn every hour, not sure if that improves the hatch rate. We have had several 100% hatches in the brinsea. If the eggs are all fertile I don't think we had ever had less than a 90% hatch. With my sportsman I am sure there are times we are pushing 85-90% hatch. I much prefer the Brinsea -- it just doesn't hold as many eggs so that is why we use our sportsman the most. We tried a foam incubator & failed miserably!
I do want a brinsea cabinet incubator, but when I see the price tag I quickly remind myself we already have a cabinet incubator.
