***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I had to toss a bunch of eggs last night. My blu and black Silkie eggs are not looking so good. :( I really wanted Black and Blue Silkies. How do you check Ameraucana eggs? I can only see through one and thankfully that one is developing.

Here are pics of my extra fancy egg candler. The only eggs that I have not been able to see into is Pheasant eggs.

Lost another purebred cochin chick last night. last night. Now I'm down to only 9 out of the Iowa eggs. Thats the second one in a week. Bummer! All the others are thriving. Hoping to bring a few to POOPS. Will now have to see what happens in the next fe weeks.

Beautiful day for weed wacking the garden. My potatoes are already up to 8 inches tall. Will be adding a hay mulch around them. Have to clear a path from the bales to the beds. Need to pull a bunch of bolted turnips too. A gardener's life is never dull.

Mine are just barely up, but I am trying a different way. I planted them way deep, (about 12 inches) now supposedly I won't have to hill or anything

and still get a good batch.

Thank you both. It will be even better when the electic is finished. I asked for a light switch with multiple plugs so I can turn off heat lamps to certain areas when the warmer weather hits.

That is one nice looking set-up.

That looks amazing. Such pretty birds too.

I wish I could get my DH to switch to raised beds. I swear I'm about to scream when he goes into his my great-great did it this way speech. He plants a massive traditional garden every year that we don't have the time to tend to. It becomes a weedy, water wasting, eyesore. I bought one of those potato growing sacks from the feed store yesterday, so

I can get more than a bowlful this year. I've been thinking about some of those chicken tunnels too. Would be smarter to scale back and use raised beds and hoop systems.
When we put in raised beds for my MIL, my FIL said...said "I'm going to have a hard time getting the tractor up in there". He had beginning stages of Alzheimers and she was in her early 70s.

Good morning all!!! I have abusy day ahead of me. I need to do all the laundry and I get to work on my garned area at the same time.... LOL. Will be interesting to see how much I get done.
Good morning Stephanie...or now it's afternoon. Bet you are out working on those new raised beds!

Just tell the wife that they sell things other then farm stuff. I have seen antiques and knick-knacks go through there and what woman doesn't love that? LOL
You are definitely talking my language.

averytds, I just cringe at the whole attitude of doing things just like great, great ....... used to. There are many things that are better the old ways, but there are sooooo many things that can and have been improved upon. When someone says that to me, my first question is why? ................. Large rowed gardens? .................... Why? does it still apply today? Blood letting? .................. Why, does it still apply today? Bathing in the same water? .................. Why, does it still apply today?

When I was a kid, we bathed in a number 2 wash tub till I was about 8, I think. A good day was when I got to bath first (of 4 kids). I cant get out of a regular tub now days. I would love to see me try the old number 2 ones again. Times change, progress is most of the time, just that. Progress. Older ones of us hate change. But that dont mean change aint good.

Finally hit a point in the day I can rest up a little from late night of chicken adventure yesterday. Left about 15 till 6 yesterday morning. Me and friends went to Guy Rose auction. Left there about noon. Went from there to Marys Flea market and looked at birds and talked to all of the chicken vender's that were still there. Always a pleasure talking to Mike and Calvin and the other folks there. From there we went to Blanchard to the auction there. Saw many BYCers there and talked to many chicken folks there. Left about 10:30. Helped friends unload birds, got home and unloaded mine. Got to bed about 2. I acquired during the days travel 3 young American game stags, and a pair of Phoenix long tails. Was an awesome day. Got up about 8:30 this morning and have been arranging chickens up till Now.

I have to do some bragging on one of our fellow members here on this site. As most of you know Modernman runs the Newcastle auction. Last week at this auction My wife thought the Phoenix longtail fowl was pretty. I told her yes, but they was only selling cockerals, no pullets and I would love to get her a pair, but this would not work with no pullets. Well crap, they pulled a pullet out of the box. So I bought a pair beings I am that kind of husband. I awaited till the fowl I took were sold so I could put them in a box. I went out to box them and they were gone. I figured somebody had stole them and told one of the guys that was working the auction. He dropped everything he was doing and flew into gear. He looked to and fro, then had the young lady that is already very busy behind the table where you pay out make a few phone calls. Low and behold the guy that had sold them had someone else pick up his boxes and got my birds as well. Modernman PMd me and told me he had my fowl back. I told him great, but in all my confusion looking for my fowl, I left a good wire cage down there. He told me he had the cage and would bring it and the fowl to Blanchard if I was coming. He did just that. Now folks I go to lots of auctions chickens and others. I have never had anyone go to this much trouble to help a person out. I just wanted to publicly thank Modernman and all the others that help make this a great auction.

Went to the Lawton Tractor Supply today. They some really sick looking chicks. They had Duramycin-10 right next to the brooders sitting open and it was obvious it was in the water too. They were still selling them as far as I can tell. Can't really tell by the pics but they weren't moving much even when touched. There were a few that were face down. At first I thought they were just basking.

Awesome! Way to go Modernman!
