***OKIES in the BYC III ***

i've got to agree with mitzi... there is just something wrong with those young roos... boppin the girls on the head and slingin em around! now Galahad isn't like that, but he is older, same with captain the cochin- now captain will run down from free ranging and dance his little heart out... so i am convinced age has something to do with it... boaz the serrama is as bad as a teenager... but joe is a gentleman...
not sure with chester, as the pullets aren't old enough yet

oh yeah, age has a LOT to do with it.

just think of them as teenage boys, all full of it and no way to control the hormones.

Kass, I feel so bad for you about your NN babies. You waited sooooo long and were so patient. It's just not fair. Something must not have been right with them before they got sent. Or maybe they hung onto them for too long before sending. It makes you wonder since they had no record of when they were sending them when you talked to them earlier in the week. Those poor tiny babies.

That's how I feel. I had a Cochin boy in with my 4 Cochin girls all of about a week and couldn't take it anymore. They're my favorites and I couldn't stand them being grabbed by the head and violated

. The Modern Bantam boy I have isn't like that at all and he's just got his 1 girl in with him. He's real gentle with her evidently, she doesn't have a feather out of place. Most my other boys border on violent-sheesh. I'd love to get ALL mine caponized. It's bound to cut down on the majority of the behavior. I would imagine even done as an older bird it'd be just like with dogs and cats-it's not *as effective against bad behavior (spraying, lifting their leg, etc) but it still cuts down on 75% of it. That'd be good enough for me. I might call the vet or the vet school and find out about that. I'd even risk losing some in order to get it done.

We do have an Ag dept at the high school. I'm pretty sure we have something like that at the vo tech and Cameron too. Might make sense to call around huh?

Now they all have to live b/c they all have names. Moxy the runt w/ "tude" Greedy the large black bully, Metoo the one w/ the dark stripe.............. everytime Moxy and Greedy get into something as soon as she realizes she runs over like me too, me too!!! and Todee the blue who seems to be too dumb to eat. Right now Todee is thriving the least, but they all seem less active then when we had the other baby chicks. And they sleep standing on thier heads, oddest thing the EE chicks didn't do that.

Robin, your boys are so beautiful. Especially lined up in their own pictures like that :) Mine are all teens except the Modern boy and the LF Faverolles boy. But the Fav has one of his girls bald so I don't think he's quite learned proper romance etiquette yet.
What?? I'm always saying stupid stuff and don't even realize how stupid it is. I'm like Sheldon on Big Bang Theory. I'll say something that I think is perfectly acceptable and catch a look from my husband and realize that was NOT something people are supposed to say out loud.
So.....what did I say that was funny? Cuz I was serious haha!

I used to have an Oscar I named Felix, I gathered things for him to eat all year round lamp beatles, june bugs etc. I would seine out small crawdads and minnows then freeze like 6 each to the ice cube and then bag them up for winter grubs and beetles were just froze in baggies but it sure made feeding him a lot easier, having the roaches would be a great way to feed them I need to set up my 55's again and get another one or three LOL
I pulled about 40 chicks out of the bator and had about that many stuck in the shell pipped and or zipped and unable to get out so I helped several out will have to wait and see if they are going to make it so not counting those I didn't have a real great hatch rate out of 135 eggs. I have had a few that had the membrane dry to the chick as they were trying to hatch out but this time was much worse, my humidity was around 80% for the last 3 days and even had some condensation on the inside of the glass so I wouldn't think that would be the cause really, Any suggestions as to how to fix that for the next hatch or why it is happening like that?
I KNEW I should've gotten ahold of you a few wks ago. I gave away a 130 g and 55 gal tank with stands. Geez, I had to beg someone to come and get them and it still took them 2 wks to pick them up. I just wanted them off my porch. After I'd told them they could have them, it occurred to me they were something you'd probably have wanted.
I don't know what causes that with the chicks. The same thing happened to me with the last hatch I tried. 3 of the chicks were doing fine & peeping like crazy. I waited too long and by the time I helped the 3rd one out the 1st 2 had already died.I had to literally peel every bit of this one's shell off myself slowly. Once she was out (Bantam Faverolles) she was fine though. I assumed it was humidity but I really don't know,

They're blessed so now they'll live!!! Moxy is going to be like Yeti!

Wow, that's good information to know, thank you. It sounds like it would be something a vet would have to do and actually put them under and clamp off bleeders like in dog and cat spays/neuters. I suppose if it were the cost of a dog or cat spay I'd do it. The problem would be finding a vet or vet school that did it and did it right.
Don't you just love the one tiny one that has the guts of a big chicken? lol Like Chihuahuas. My daughters 4 lb Chihuahua crawled under the fence took took on my 2 80 lb Golden Retrievers a few yrs ago. He was getting whooped bad when I snatched him up but did it stop him? Nope. He was snapping and snarling at those big dogs all the way into the house lol
I thought you wanted boys because they'd get bigger to process? Or did you want some girls for breeders?
You know, I think it's such a good idea to raise our own meat nowadays. Maybe the softer-hearted ones of us could get together and raise batches of meat birds and process each other's birds? I don't have a problem doing it, it's doing it to birds I've raised myself and babied. But if some of us got a batch of 50 meat birds of the same breed, maybe we could trade our batch with another's batch and just process and keep that batch? Is that going too far? Haha!

LOL I have been toying with the idea of a meat chicken exchange program ever since I got my chickens! That way I'm not eating MY chickens!

Yeah well zebra better get some manners and start treating my ladies like ladies or he's going to be awful lonely watchin em through a fence! LOL

Mitzi - I think what Mefordz was laughing at is the first two sentences (at least) of your description of the rooster/hen romance. I thought it was funny too! It's not what you said, but the way you said it. Admittedly, it can be a violent affair (pun intended.) I have yet to see ANY of my hens lie in wait - or even give permission for the rooster to hop aboard. It's more like a wild chase with feathers flying kind of event. There's NO romance involved in it at all.
