Robin, your boys are so beautiful. Especially lined up in their own pictures like that Mine are all teens except the Modern boy and the LF Faverolles boy. But the Fav has one of his girls bald so I don't think he's quite learned proper romance etiquette yet.

Robin, I don't think an apron would work on the Fav girl, it's the back of her head that he's got bald. Maybe she needs a hat They're the pair I got from Newcastle. The other 2 hens he's in with don't have a mark on them.o
Also-one of my EE"s had her back completely stripped, skinned down to the muscle. I wasn't sure at 1st what was causing it but when I put her in a yard with a roo and only 1 other girl she got in worse shape in just 2 days from being bred. I felt awful. I've had her by herself now for over a month and she's healing fine.When I got her last fall her back feathers were shredded but they grew back because I didn't have any boys in the layer's yard with her. I think she's just one of those hens that accepts too many breedings so the roos take advantage. She's such a nice girl that I'll make a place for her here without any males.
Robin, while I have you....ahem....you wouldn't be interested in a special needs Dark Brahma chick, would you? I've got 1 of the 5 with a crooked beak, not sure what it's called.

You know I kind of been thinking about that as well. When my DD gets home, we have been talking about raising meaties, for her and her friends, not me. She said she would be fine with learning to process them. That is why Bill and I have been talking about the mobile processing set-up.
I don't know if I got a bunch of birds that look the same and process them at 5 or 6 months I may not have a problem, just don't know. But I am with you all I would prefer not to kill those I raised and I honestly don't care if that makes me a soft-hearted wuss or not.

I agree with the "co-butchering". Just having someone there would help a LOT. Maybe a "Processing Get Together" is in order lol! We could all bring our birds, another person would process them while we processed someone else's, then each person would take home the number of birds they brought. We wouldn't have to look our own babies in the eyes and end their lives. We could play music and drink iced tea and it might actually work.


They're doing awesome! I have lots of babies of both breeds but I haven't counted. It's probably going to be a long time yet before the colonies are stable enough that I can feed them to my chickens but I've been feeding males a couple times a week to 3 of my Oscar fish. It's the perfect food for them. I'd looked high and low for some sort of a breeding colony of June Bugs for my Oscars and never could find any. It hadn't even occurred to me to use roaches. This is perfect.
Oddly enough most of my chickens are scared of them, I guess they're too big and they have to get used to them. The layers yard are a bunch of scavengers though-I give them a few bugs every once in awhile just for the pure comedy of it. One of the smallest ones will grab it and the chase is on with all the big ones running after them

Congrats on your hatching!!! I so enjoy when the chicks are hatching. I have 3 dozen eggs under the feathered incubators which will be hatching in a couple of weeks.

Hiya Everyone, I'm counting my Chickie's as they hatch LOL I have no idea how many there are yet though I took a peek and was just in time to see one come popping out so they are still making it out I haven't disturbed them much at all and the temptation is soooo hard to resist but I will be clearing out all the hatched ones shortly and of course there will be pictures LOL, this weather is so nice I haven't turned on the AC yet I am holding out till it gets where I have to have it (maybe tomorrow if it don't snow, this is Oklahoma after all)

A big welcome to all the newer folks we are sure glad you found us we always need new people to hone our enabler skills on and although it's tough trying enabling the veteran enablers it's always a challenge

and resisting the ones that are really good at enabling is an effort in futility...

i've got to agree with mitzi... there is just something wrong with those young roos... boppin the girls on the head and slingin em around! now Galahad isn't like that, but he is older, same with captain the cochin- now captain will run down from free ranging and dance his little heart out... so i am convinced age has something to do with it... boaz the serrama is as bad as a teenager... but joe is a gentleman...

This must mean some of my girls are easy because I have a few that squat down in front of the roosters. What is funny thought is the roosters often act like they don't know what to do when the hens make it so easier. The pervs!!!

Mitzi - I think what Mefordz was laughing at is the first two sentences (at least) of your description of the rooster/hen romance. I thought it was funny too! It's not what you said, but the way you said it. Admittedly, it can be a violent affair (pun intended.) I have yet to see ANY of my hens lie in wait - or even give permission for the rooster to hop aboard. It's more like a wild chase with feathers flying kind of event. There's NO romance involved in it at all.

I make aprons for my girls. Usually the not sew method since they are quick and easy to make and then I do not feel so bad if they get messed up. They work great for protecting the hens backs and sides. Also de-spuring your roosters is a good idea as well. Save poor little hens from getting their sides torn open.

Okay so I am going to make a big batch of pickled eggs. Decided with 12 dozen eggs in the fridge so I needed to find something to do with them. A friend let me borrow a couple of large glass pickle jars and I just bought some pickling spices. I have been soaking the eggs in vinegar to make peeling them easier, which appears to be working. Used all the bantam eggs since people really want the large eggs when they buy them for eating.
I really like pickled eggs and hope these turn out. Does anyone have any suggestions for pickled eggs? I was thinking of making a batch of spicy pickled eggs, next time. Yummy! Since I am getting 1 1/2 - 2 dozen eggs a day that will not be too long from now. Do you think people would be interested in buying them? I know at Blanchard, people were spending $25 for a quart of pickled quail eggs. Since I have never had quail eggs I am not sure if they taste better the chicken eggs or not. Just trying to find a way to make a little money to supplement my feed bill. Also how long do you store the eggs before they are ready to eat?

I sure hope so. He did seem to calm down a lot in the afternoon. He hasn't actually hurt them yet. He seems so confused, by it all. LOL

lost one of my serama hens tonite, my little white frizzle passed in my hands- not sure really what happened- and i don't know what her age was, she began breathing hard and went into convusions, its been very warm here, and they were on the porch in their cage, and the guineas were racing up and down - could that could have stressed her??

Just want everyone to know that pealing 5+ dozen eggs really sucks!
