We should have some hatched by poops. The eggs we set Thursday will be keets for poops. Plus we sat a few last wk. How many we have depends on the fertility of these eggs! I should know more in a few wks. hope for at least 2 dz keets to bring.

Thanks everyone for the support, kind thoughts and offers of chicks. The hatchery and I are playing phone tag, appearently they aren't willing to call the cell number I gave them, only the home number.

Gary said they were shipped on Wend and we got them Sat. not sure where he got the Wend date, maybe from the box itself as we haven't actually spoken to anyone at the hatchery yet, called a couple of times but still no response.

Such a shame for the hatchery to send chicks without notifying you of their pending arrival, especially since you contacted them early in the week. For them to be sent on a Wednesday and not arriving until Saturday spelled certain doom for most of those day old chicks and a failure of priority mail. An absorbed yolk can provide nurishment for a day or two, but if they were hatched on Tuesday, shipped on Wed..and arrived on Sat morning...that is almost 3.5 full days plus some. To find so many already dead on arrival is heartwrenching. I hope the hatchery makes good on the shipment and communicates fairly with you. So sorry you are havcing to endure this.

Seems like when I have my day all planned out, something here on the farm interrupts my plans.
I intended to work in the garden today to get the corn planted and to clean out one more box for more tomatoes.....but...I really can't complain....they did build me a wonderful hen house expansion.

In late spring, we begin bringing the herd up to the barn lot to get them used to coming into the lot, then pen them and sort the calves out for vaccinations, etc. We did this last week with the first 11 pair and took those to pasture.
Today all the cows with calves followed the feed truck into the lot the very first time and the boys closed the gate behind them. Since we have pasture rented that has grass, the boys decided it woud be a great day to tag, band and vaccinate all those calves. We number tag our calves and match the calf number to the cow so when we move them, we take the right pairs. Of course, I didn't have the tags number coded yet. It didn't take long, I did have the 8:1 vaccinations already in the fridge and had the Ivomec here too. We spent the morning taking care of the calves and then spent time matching the pairs. Only lack four cows our of the 25 worked today and will do that this evening when the calves nurse.
We will move those pairs to pasture with a bull later this week.

We still have almost 40 cows to calve this year...so there will be another round-up in late summer and one in mid fall.

Lost a duck today.... quite literally. No sign of fowl play (haha, trying to stay light hearted here) just gone. My 5 year old is really upset cause the ducks are supposed to be hers. Hope some of those swedish eggs hatch next week, hopefully that will cheer her up.
