***OKIES in the BYC III ***

GOOOD Morning Oklahoma Chicken folks. I hope all of you out West didn't have too much damage from the hail and storms yesterday.
The weather guy on channel 4 here quit using normal terms like "golf ball size hail" and was saying stuff like "some places have baseballs and softballs on the ground" or " there are golf balls covering the ground." It made me want to go out West and start picking up sports equipment!

Yeah!! Put my duck eggs in lockdown last night and I already have a pip this morning! Now that's how I expect a hatch to start! I know it's hold hat for the big hatchers here, but it's exciting for a first timer.

OceansEve, I hope you get ducks! I'm already selling my 10 egg Brinsea because I want more room. So when you go to get another incubator don't even bother getting the 10-egg. Go straight for the one that holds 2 dozen eggs lol
Morning everyone. I am so sleepy. I put all 14 chicks in my room. BIG mistake. I don't remember my reds making this much noise compared to these brahmas. lol. But Oh well. Doesn't take much for me to go downstairs to the couch. My dad came in the room last night to look at the chicks that Mitzi gave us. He brought in one of those huge mosquito looking bugs, idk what they are called. He was cracking up watching them. They got excited at first but then when one let go and it flew they all got scared. Bless em. The little lavender am's grabbed it ad then it was a fight. Too funny.
My blue silkie didn't make it. So I have one white silkie chick and it makes me sad. So my dad said he's buying a fan and a turner for the incubator....I think we are going to need to build more coops. He said the next auction I go to he's going.
Mitzi, that black am's is the calmest bird. He walks up to me and lets me pick him up. I say him, idk I haven't bothered looking at wings yet. But I'm just so in love with it.

I thought it was just my own group of Dark Brahmas who were blabbermouths. But the noise level has really increased since I got the Light Brahmas and put them all together. Oh my lol They make the oddest trilling noise, too. I do love both sets of Brahmas. There were 2 black AMs and I stuck my hand in there and asked them, "Who wants to go for a ride??" Yours came running up so that's how you got him haha! I was feeding the Lav Ams and the Dark Brahmas some of my feeder bugs here and they were going nuts playing KeepAWay, it was so funny! So the little Lavenders probably think they're bug catching pros.
How can you tell by their wings what sex they are??

I've got two little giants (foam jobs) that I'm pitching in the trash as soon as possible. IMO, Save a little bit more and invest in a Brinsea octagon 20 eco. Not as big as all the foam jobs, but for a small incubator you won't find better in my opinion.

thanks- from what i have read the foam once are hard to regulate?

I have one that does...ok...but does have swings, the other fluctuates real bad, both have digital thermostats and forced air. Humidity levels are hard to maintain too.

Our Brinsea is just awesome. It works great with chicken eggs, LF and bantams, and on our quail eggs that are a pain in the rear it is very reliable. I won't even put quail eggs in the LG, and only chicken eggs that I have an abundance of in the LG. My d'Anvers, OEGB, and Buckeyes I never would trust in the LG's.

Edited to add, just asked DW, she said 24 LF eggs will fit in brinsea, 75 quail eggs to give you an idea of the size. Not as many eggs, but well worth the investment.

I've heard a lot of people complain about the Little Giants but then they turn around and talk about how they're changing the temp dial every 30 seconds and lifting the lid. I didn't have a single problem with mine but I only used it with 1 hatch. The eggs were shipped from 2 different states and the total hatch rate was like 40% I got my Cochin babies out of the deal so it was worth it to me!

Ksane, Glad you finally saw the light and got a 10 egger! Bet you would have wished you had gotten the 20 eco way back when we were talking about it in January, lol!

Oh I'm kicking myself alright! Went ahead and got the turning cradle along with the 20 Eco this time, too. I figured I'd save myself some time since I'd only end up regretting not getting it and having to order it anyway

. I'd been saving for something else and decided to get the incubator instead. Woke up this morning and realized I'd actually made the right decision.
I'm so glad to hear you like yours. I wonder why they call it an Eco 20 when it holds 24 eggs?

Was wondering about a few contest at poops. Kinda like the fair. Prettiest egg, darkest, smallest, biggest, oddest, etc. I know the kids would love it. We could set up a table & let people vote??? Any objections? I could organize it & set up a table. Maybe we could give out prizes for winners.

Jcat get with Monty on this, I would send a PM just in case.

I dont use the bars in my Eco & can get more eggs in it. Unless they are jumbo sized eggs, then 24 is pushing it sometimes. Even with the bars in it i can fit 27 guinea eggs. If there is any extra space where the eggs may move I put pieces of cut up egg carton inside to stop the movement.
Mitzi you might as well hold onto that mini you never know when you will find an extra 10 eggs that need to be set ASAP!

The turkey eggs lock down next wk, I thought it was this week but when I candled them there was still alot of space in the egg. After looking at the dates again I realized I was off a whole wk in my head. (I had snuck & candles them at night so I could prepare my self for DD candling them).

For cut worms you can put collars out of cardboard toilet paper rolls to keep the works away. But with all our rain I am not sure how helpful it would be. The cardboard wouldnt stay long.

Trying to get in gear & get some stuff done today. Just can't talk myself into it yet. Doing meatloaf, mashed potatoes, broccoli & rice casserole with yeast rolls for DH guys tomorrow. Got the meatloaf, mashed potatoes & rolls prepped. I think that is way too much starch but it is what DH asked for. Now I need to clean the kitchen!

Congrats on the bees sooner! I will PM Monty when I am @ my PC. For some reason the taptotalk app won't do PM for BYC but it does for another forum I use.
