***OKIES in the BYC III ***

There's so many Wyandottes & Orpingtons around and I've never had one (or met one except at auctions). Do they have similar personalites?

well breed wyandottes can be compared to cochins in personality. They are a great bird. Don't really know much about orps never had any.

I have not seen Jim Evans since the Lexington sale.

Where is he having his auction now?

He is no longer holding auctions to the best of my knowledge but is still around and active in the business, he prefers to deal large numbers rather than 1-2 at a time.

Do you have a Orpington in with your hens? I'd be interested in some eggs if you do.

White is much like black, never what you actually see. White has two possibilities Dominant or recessive but both are just a "off switch" for expression of color. In order to know what you will get you would need to fully understand the complete breeding background of the birds for at least 3-5 generations. Many prominant breeders and exhibitors will cross blue or black that carry silver for hackle color into the white to prevent or reduce sun brassing.
You could easily expect to see either light blue, splash looking birds, with lacing present or other possibilities but for the most part very light colored birds with better leg color as the white undoubtedly has good clean yellow legs as a cochin should.

That sounds confusing. I thought if either were black the babies would all be black, too. That online genetic calculator isn't exactly accurate then.

Off to feed, water, check on everyone and eveything now that dinner is out of the way. Then off to get cleaned up and ready for 2 am since tomorrow is my long day. See yall in a day or two or as time allows.

That is based on which Black ( there are 17 genetic variations that create black) and which white, what was in thier background. The calculator makes assumptions that can be manipulated if you know what you have. As an example a Birchen Based Dominant Black over an extended black based recessive white should be black.

Thanks, Carl. If you could PM his contact info it would be much appreciated.

If others have layers to sell, I'm still interested. I want to get my current laying flock up to 200 and have a long way to go. I'm raising some little ones to further fill up the rolling cotton coop.

You have many many years to go with the Birds and don't need to understand it all just what affects your flock and what you want to change them and what you might use to make those changes. You and I both know that any line or variety cross within a breed will take at least 3 generations to see the results and Breed to breed will be at least 5 generations to get where you want to be. Now choosing what to add to what thats where you need to know what you have and what your adding.
