***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I haven't been on here in a long time and there are way too many pages to even start to try to catch up. I did see that Matt has some really nice looking birds posted. We are in Duncan now and living in town is actually not that bad. Grace is working for the same company I have worked for the last 18 years and loving it.

For those new to the site this is our daughter, Grace. She was the first to graduate from the "People of Oklahoma Poultry School"

Hey Shellie, sorry didn't get to meet you there. Were the button quail in plastic cartons from Stoney Creek? If so, those were the ones I brought. The incubation instructions are in the "fine print" on the label.

When they hatch, the babies are so tiny...and can become "splay legged" very easily. Equine pine pellets are perfect bedding, gives them purchase to stand on, holds heat and smells well. (Others might say, "oh, just put down paper towels"...you can try it, but speaking from experience, bad idea.) The brooder needs to be at 95*F for the first week, drop 5*F per week until your reach the inside ambient temps. ( I say inside because buttons do much better inside than out. They can not handle the extreme temps cold or hot...but deal with heat better they are a tropical bird)

On food, Game bird starter or GBS. It comes in crumbles, but even then, the crumbles are too large. I find putting a handful in a zip lock bag and crushing to the consistency of very fine sand, power fine is bad. At 6 weeks old you can switch to the normal crumble and feed them that for life.

Button quail are monogamous and mate for life. Some folks will try the colony style life, but they will do much better in pairs.

Buttons are more pets...but are still spazy, they won't sit on your finger or anything. A lot of folks will get them to put in the bottoms of their inside aviaries for clean-up maintenance birds, eating all the dropped seeds and such from the perching birds...but they still need the 26%-28% protein...they will die on seeds alone.

My email was on the carton as well, feel free to email any questions you may have or run into.

Good luck!

Bill

edited for the PS, how are those other chicks doing? The Ameraucanas and d'Anvers?

Thank you Bill! Having the information makes me feel so much better. Yes they are the ones from you, I never even noticed that! Those eggs are so tiny. I will keep them in my aviary when full grown. They are pretty big areas, can I keep more than one pair together? Will they claim there own area? If not I will only keep the one pair in each. As spoiled as my parrots are these guys will be fine. LOL In the aviaries are only small birds, the parrots have huge cages of their own. My house is nothing but Cages and Aquariums.
The Ameraucana and d'Anver chicks are great. I got five of each! They are totally spoiled rotten by the kids, umm and maybe me just a little!

They are in fact still in the indoor brooder and the kids carry them around and hold them while watching tv. Did you get the pics I PM'd? I was having computer issues that week and they may not have gone through.

and it is true isnt it.

we are the cutest cause we are the youngest.

we are the smartest cause we get taught by the older ones,

and were just naturaly sweeter cause ,,,,,well we just are!

LOL this is the way my youngest is, according to the older ones we are not near strict enough on him, but he is smart as a whip! And it is because he is a little sponge he just learns from hearing us work with the older kids. He also is innocent looking enough to make others believe he couldn't possibly be guilty of anything! LOL

On a different note here are pictures of my roses, these were all bought last Aug. looking all dead for $1.50 a bush. I didn't think they would make it but they are doing GREAT!!! I LOVE roses and went to California last summer and the grounds we stayed on were covered with roses. I came home and told dh I want some of every color! I still need some blue roses and purple ones. I have lots of pink, yellow and one white bush but need many more if anyone has a good source of rose bushes please let me know.

wow, love the pics both feathered and petaled :) Thought I heard someone crying at me when I went down to the garden. Got some berry plants in the ground finally even have some small blueberries on one. Coming inside I realized where the cry was coming from, one of the turkey poults managed to get stuck under the house. If she's not out by the time DH gets home I'll have to get him to dismantle part of the porch to get her out
