***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I spent all evening and tonight taking care of that one baby quail. I have become "mom". First the little buggar got out of two different brooders that I thought were escape proof. Those little button quail babies can squeeze through some tiny spots!! Then I tried a finch cage, yep you guessed it, escaped again. I then had him/her in a dog carrier with tiny wire over the door. Found him in the cabinet under the fish tank that time. He had found the power converter for the tank lights and was happily warm. Every time I pick him up he immediately crawls up to my neck and then in my hair. He sits behind my ear singing.

I had a warming pad in my lap and he would climb down into it and sleep in the fleece. My hubby finally redid the entire bird cage in teeny tiny wire and plastic canvas. I have him sitting beside me with a light. We will see if this holds him!!

I kind of doubt I will get much sleep tonight.

Talk to y'all tomorrow,
Shellie
I have used a large glass aquarium to contain quail before. Those button quail are no bigger than a thimble and the pharoah quail aren't much bigger.

Neat pics!
Poor Crele. He is such a cute little guy.
#2 is the very definition of a mixed pen.
That color really suits your hen. She looks like she really likes to dress up.
That little Old English Game Bantam is the most darling little thing! Every one of them always tames up like a tiny little puppy within minutes. I'll get you talked into one yet

Sadly two of my red goldens died today. I just don't understand. And the other three eggs haven't done anything.

Had a hen today who had part of a green eggshell she was trying hard to pass. I saw her try multiple times. No luck. Soaked her in the tub then she pushed real hard & the shell was hanging outside for 10 min or so still connected. She pushed again & the shell was sucked back up inside her. I covered her up with a towel & the next time she pushed I was able to grab ahold of the shell. It was still connected to her so I didn't want to pull it loose. DH sanitized a pr of scissors & cut at the top of the shell. She a tiny bit of the shell still is attached but now she seems to be doing much better. It was only the shell we cut, I am not sure if she will make it or not. She is in a cage now eating & pacing back & forth wanting out. She is much more comfortable & not pushing now. The part we removed was a out the size & thickness of a quarter. Poor girl had been in distress since @ least 2 this afternoon. Possibly longer.

Are your pheasants tame? They are SO pretty. I like the pheasants more than the peacocks actually. I just can't imagine the hassle it must be to try to keep a peacock's tail in decent shape.

They're cute now, but they grow up to look like this:

and this
Bill if that was suppose to change my mind about wanting one it didn't work!

They are even cuter full grown!

I hope she gets better. What do you think was wrong? I wouldn't have known what to do at all!

the story i heard was a hawk took a chick and that hen went after it and got her chick back...

are they hard to hatch?

I don't think they're hard to hatch, but time consuming and meticulous. You will have better results to lay the egg on it's side and hand turn it verses putting it in an auto turner. Some of the old timers will even let a broody chicken sit on them for the first 10 days then move to a bator and hand turn...

Mitzi, I've been told by folks they have had some jumbo that were tame, my experience they show tolerance when I feed them...but will flush in a moment if I get down to get an egg close to them. Ever have a 12lb bird jump into your face flapping with sharp spurs? It hurts and makes it hard to find glasses when they've been expelled from your face, lol....

Handled from chicks you probably could tame anything down though....I mess with the chicks I got to see if that works....will be able to tell you in a few months. Now, my deco pheasants are pretty tame....My black Melanistics are just complete spazoids!

Shellie, they do look pretty cool as adults
