Believe me, Jim-after 24 yrs of marriage I know better than to try to scare him with a spider lol! I know when to stop
Welcome Randy & Krystle What kind of chickens do you like?? Kass, I hope the little NN does good. One of ours twisted her leg bad enough that she didn't use it for a couple days. Kept her inside in a small crate so she wouldn't move around and she's doing much better after just a couple days. Brandi-glad you got babies!
Worked on more pens all day today. Moved the Bantam Favs to the pen next to them and put top soil and pine bark nuggets down. I like these bark chips a lot. At least if they swallow some it won't ball up in their crops like the straw did. They'd been living with bare dirt since the scare with the little pullet's impacted crop. She's the one I named 'Jillian'. I'm loving how pretty this Blue Salmon boy is. Robin-see what I mean about them looking way different than Salmons? I think maybe one of yours is Blue Salmon. I've got the 4 Silkie girls in a 10x10 and we're building them a 10x15 run. The posts were already set from awhile ago and I hated to waste perfectly good posts so the girls get a run. 2 Silkie boys are splitting the pen next to theirs and get a10x15 run also. Like I said-I hate wasting perfectly good set posts
Here's some Bantam Faverolles pictures. I can't say enough good things about this breed. So many of you would just love them, they're the sweetest gentlest little things.
Cecilia is the one I hatched here when I had my Little Giant incubator (Carl hatched the others). I had to literally peel every chip of shell off of her. It was a last resort because the other 2 had already died. I'm sure it was a humidity problem. That was before I had a meter for it.
Oh, they'll be 3 months old in a week. Nice size for bantams.
If all else fails Dane Rescue used to be one of the better organized rescue groups with funds to work with vs individual groups. You might look them up online and contact them. They'll be very thankful you've already neutered him-good for you
Deanne, my husband isn't scared of anything in the world-except spiders. You oughta' see him when he catches sight of one of those big tarantulas
I'm not sure the Dane rescue up here is around anymore, if you're talking about the same one. I think they were called Heartland Great Dane. I tried to contact them when I found a different dane when we first moved up here and they never contacted me back. I dealt with them some years ago and really liked their organization. I hear there is a Heartland Lab Rescue now, not sure if it's a whole other group or if they changed breeds? Dunno. Oh and he was already neutered, that's why I was so surprised no one was looking for him. He looked like he'd been dumped, but fixing such a large breed costs so much it just surprised me someone would dump him.... then again if he's been blind since birth, maybe the breeder did it when he was a pup before selling him. Who knows?
******! Lost a chicken to the **** snake today. DH saw it when he was locking up, but didn't get to it in time. Lost one of the two cornish I hatched
Let the war on snakes begin
I wouldn't mind so much if the **** thing ate what it killed, but just killing them is really pissing me off.
Hens will take a day off from egg laying occasionally. It could be that some of them are taking off the same days, so there are fewer eggs for you to find. Of course there are other reasons why there is a decrease in egg laying - heat - if they're too hot they could be stressed, causing them to stop laying. That would be my second guess. Could something be stealing the eggs?
