***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Oh Wayne, I'm so sorry about your little girl :-( It takes so long to get over the death of a special pet :-(

i all ready had to instull the okie chicken A/C to keep the birds from getting to hot

Joe, what kind of hose is that? Did you poke the holes in it or do you buy them that way? That's one of the best ideas I've ever seen. I've got 1 of those coiled misters and but there's no way I can put one in every bird's yard. Now that hose-that's a good idea and I can do that easy.
Good luck with the UK Orps. I'm sure enjoying these 2 "American Orp babies" I got from Bill.
and here are a few pic from my homoziguse NNs and my houdan cross they are nicely beerded and have more crest than i expected i will be breeding the F1 pullets back to the motteled houdan roo and 50% of the F2s will be naked necked motteled houdans i call them HOODA NAKED

Mitzi, that pen is awesome!!!! I love how you are building those. Those are some lucky birds! The hoop houses I am building take 4- 2x6x8s, two livestock panels (I got ours at Atwoods they were bent up on the edges so they gave me 10% off), misc. 2x4's to frame in the door, we used a 9'x 4' piece of pressboard for the fronts you could cover this in wire instead, and your choice of wire to cover it all in. Oh and a tarp, I forgot the tarp so had to stop at Lowes today on my way home and get one, I use the 9x12 one so that it leaves parts of the bottom uncovered for airflow. Then we used cedar branches inside for roosts. It took us a day to build it from start to finish.
Ocean, sorry about the sting of badluck lately, hope your little one turns up and you find a home for the dane.
Off to catch up on about 10 pages of posts.
I can think of a ton of uses for those hoop houses right off the top of my head! I really like them. And if they were under trees it would add even more shade. My big thing recently is not mixing birds (learned the hard way not to do that). Those hoops houses would be perfect for housing just a few birds and not have to worry about ever mixing them with anyone else.
Bake the eggs in the oven, works great! It was a tip from Bill. Super easy to peel. That's what I do when I feed them to the birds because the baked ones don't keep very well. 30 min at 350 degrees.

I have two garden spots for the chickens, it is full of planted boss and kale, greens, radish ect. for them to eat when it gets hot and has several things planted in trellis for us to eat but that should provide some shade for them, anyway when I planted it out I put all the kale seeds in there for the chickens. Knowing all the articles about how good they are for people to eat and how tastey they say the kale is I was second guessing myself. Anyway I waded through the thick plants to make sure the people food was well watered and look for squash bugs ect.... I sampled each type of kale I found in there and I have to say I am glad I put it in there, that might be healthy, but it is pretty fowl tasting stuff!!!!!

You have to cook kale. I have an awesome recipe for navy bean and kale soup.

Is there a difference between the orps besides color?

i took some pics of the silver blue splash OEGB today

Joe,
Looks to be a poorly colored Blue golden Duckwing, it is a very uneven shade of blue in body, and lacks the blue stripe for a Silver Blue in the hackle, The Gold is evident in the wing bow, and saddle.

He is not splash and will not breed like a splash.
I have seen these things many times they are not uncommon.
The wing Bay is often absent in the cross blues come in both extended balck and and birchen based black. For red leakage to occour at least one of his parents had to carry gold and not silver there for could not be a silver blue anyway.

there is a lot of dirferance and not just feather quality

UK orps are larger boded birds with a way more rounded aperance they allso have a lot more under fluff here are some pics of some of my blues they are nothing like the USA line orpingtons and anny one hoo says they are have never seen the UK orpingtons in person

Joe, do tell the secret for the hoses, pretty please???? And please don't let my 10 year old see those birds, he keeps seeing OEGBs he likes and thinks he needs those too, lol.

Mitzi, our hoop houses take 3 of us to move but I love that I can move them to fresh green spots in the yard every week. Ours are in the shade too, I have a covered dog kennel but it is in full sun and the birds are just to hot in there. That is the birds that got moved to the new hoop house. We will be moving the dog kennel (takes 5 or 6 of us to move it) to a shaded spot before we put anymore birds in there. The hoop houses end up being about 8' x 10' so could house 6-8 LF birds easily. Right now in our first one I have 8 young roos in it and all is peacefull for now, lol. I figure in another month or so we will have to figure out something different for them but in the meantime they are enjoying the fresh grass and shade.
