***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Mitzi Taron thinks she makes great money with her hobby. Since we bought the initial incubators, pens & birds plus pay for the gas to get to the auction she has done great-- but the reality is when she takes birds to sell most times it doesn't cover the gas & the food we eat at the sale. She loves it though & I figure it is teaching her hard work & responsibility plus social skills. She is so shy at talking to other adults for the most part, but they always approach her about guineas or hatching & she is forced to talk to them. She sets aside 1/2 the money she makes & it goes in an envelope for feed. Days when she doesnt want to do chores she pays her sister $15 a day to tend to the birds. Sad thing is if I relied on the funds to purchase all the feed the birds would be hungry by September. Told DH the other day if we sell off all her birds & equipment when she graduates we may cover 1 semester in college. The girl sure loves her birds!
Oh Traci one of the buff eggs you brought to the auction hatched today, so far that makes 3 buff Cochins, Alexis has claimed them. She started wanting birds of her own after She figured out her little sister is getting rich selling birds. Not sure we can manage 2 chicken crazed kids!
Well done with my lunch break, going to clean the barn, then catch some guineas to take down to the neighbor.
I brought them to POOPS. They are from the trio that Tracy bought at POOPS. Our bantam Buffs are theoretically my Husband's birds. He is sure happy the trio got a great home at Tacy's. Yonderoak, were our Buff roo came from, says that the Buffs seem to be the fiestiest Cochins and our roo is definately the most "outspoken" of all our roos but that still is far from "gamey". I hope Alexis likes them. Cochins are teddy bears.

and here are a few pic from my homoziguse NNs and my houdan cross they are nicely beerded and have more crest than i expected i will be breeding the F1 pullets back to the motteled houdan roo and 50% of the F2s will be naked necked motteled houdans i call them HOODA NAKED

Mitzi, that pen is awesome!!!! I love how you are building those. Those are some lucky birds! The hoop houses I am building take 4- 2x6x8s, two livestock panels (I got ours at Atwoods they were bent up on the edges so they gave me 10% off), misc. 2x4's to frame in the door, we used a 9'x 4' piece of pressboard for the fronts you could cover this in wire instead, and your choice of wire to cover it all in. Oh and a tarp, I forgot the tarp so had to stop at Lowes today on my way home and get one, I use the 9x12 one so that it leaves parts of the bottom uncovered for airflow. Then we used cedar branches inside for roosts. It took us a day to build it from start to finish.

Ocean, sorry about the sting of badluck lately, hope your little one turns up and you find a home for the dane.

Off to catch up on about 10 pages of posts.

Well its a sad Memorial day for us for sure. Some of you have met our little "retirement child" Izzy. She jumped out a ditch right in front of a motorcycle this afternoon. They were very nice and stopped and told us and apologized but there was no way they could avoid her. She was really like our child and will be missed greatly. At least it was fast and she didn't suffer.

OE leg color varies with variety, For the Blue they will be dark slaty blue but are likely lighter at hatch, and possibly have lighter toes than legs, leg color gets darker when they get to 3-6 weeks. The splash may have even lighter legs sometimes they do sometimes they dont.
These two blues have very dark legs. I think it would be easiest if I take pics and post them. I'll be back soon........

banjoe, totally agree way to hot and dry this early in the season, makes me cringe for what is to come.

Love the black crested naked hooda!

Carl, Nathanael is drooling over those pictures, lol. His little columbian OE are making a little nest spot in their coop he checks numerous times a day for eggs. I am secretly praying they don't start laying until after July 4th. He will want to set those eggs and I just can't do it until after July 4th lol.

Nana, anytime you have some CW pullets to part with we would love a few more. I love this trio, they are so laid back, hubby hopes to build their big pen once we get done with fireworks. I just can't believe how sweet these three are, alot like my buff orphingtons and my black australorps.

Well I thought our EE's were laying already and just laying pink eggs instead of green, nope today went to gather eggs and Nathanael brought me a green egg! So finally I think all my girls in the laying hen coop is laying now, lol. We got almost 2 dozen eggs today, I am gonna have to figure out how to use up these eggs, I think I have 10 dozen in the fridge now.
