My turkeys are mating! .... well... sorta.... one of the boys is trying to figure it out :p the girl is presenting to him and he's scratching and pecking at her head. How do you say "Wrong end!" in turkey? They're only 3 months old so they've got plenty of time to figure it out before it really matters, but it sure is funny to watch. Heard one of them gobble for the first time on friday.

Mitzi - there were only a few I was out that bad on and that was after the dog that was my bad apple (who my sister found, he wasn't one that I pulled) turned out to have parvo. I had two litters of pups at the time and I had around $500 in the three pups that lived, never mind the ones that didn't. I did all the shots myself, the rescue in Yukon used to do a special twice a year where you could buy these spay/neuter certificates really cheap so I would buy what I thought I would need till the next sale (and of course I always used them all lol) and I used to have a good relationship with one vet there until about the time I got out of rescuing she started to change her policies and wanted to vax them herself instead of taking my word. She also upped her prices at the same time. So normally I was only asking $75-$100 for a fully vetted, spayed/neutered dog, but they were always mixed breed. I probably only had 5 full bloods in the 3 years I did it.

Nana ]Those are probably the nicest Col. wyn. ive seen ,good type and color .You and Carl have done a really good with your breeding , i think Carl will agree with me ,right color and right type aint always easy on col. wyn.
Never has been easy but it is a thing of beauty when its right...

Well if I go by eye color, seems like I have two male pheasants. Now I'm going to have to find them females later down the road if I ever want to breed them.

Now If I could just sex my turkey's so i know what I got. It would be great if I had two toms and two hens.

Mitzi Taron thinks she makes great money with her hobby. Since we bought the initial incubators, pens & birds plus pay for the gas to get to the auction she has done great-- but the reality is when she takes birds to sell most times it doesn't cover the gas & the food we eat at the sale. She loves it though & I figure it is teaching her hard work & responsibility plus social skills. She is so shy at talking to other adults for the most part, but they always approach her about guineas or hatching & she is forced to talk to them. She sets aside 1/2 the money she makes & it goes in an envelope for feed. Days when she doesnt want to do chores she pays her sister $15 a day to tend to the birds. Sad thing is if I relied on the funds to purchase all the feed the birds would be hungry by September. Told DH the other day if we sell off all her birds & equipment when she graduates we may cover 1 semester in college. The girl sure loves her birds!
Oh Traci one of the buff eggs you brought to the auction hatched today, so far that makes 3 buff Cochins, Alexis has claimed them. She started wanting birds of her own after She figured out her little sister is getting rich selling birds. Not sure we can manage 2 chicken crazed kids!
Well done with my lunch break, going to clean the barn, then catch some guineas to take down to the neighbor.

lol! That kid is going to do great things with her life. And she gets to have fun doing it all, too :)

I remember when my turkey boy was just figuring it out, he was a lot older than 3 months though and still couldn't figure out the right end

The lady I sold them to a few months back said yesterday that the 2 girls and the boy hatched out 6 baby Royal Palms. They're so incredibly tame, she said her kids just love those turkeys. I sure feel better every time she updates me.
I hear ya on the rescue. I honestly don't miss a second of doing it, I feel so jaded about it all now. All the sob stories getting passed around from list to list with people trying to guilt *other people into taking animals that they don't want to take. Once I was done I was done all over.

Question for Carl or other OE breeders -

What color are OE chick legs (blue)? Michael R. gave me 3 Bantam Ameraucana and 3 Blue OE eggs. Of course I forgot to mark them before I gave them to Jack. The  Ameraucuna eggs were as small as the OE and 1 was blue but 2 were white like the OE eggs. Three of the 6 hatched andf I have 2 Blue chicks with slate legs and 1 looks like a Splash. None have what looks like a beard. Michale R has a trio of Ameraucana, including a really nice blue hen, that are super small. There eggs are the same size as OEs. The hen I got from Teach lays eggs about the same size as my Bantam Cochins.

I also got 3 LF Buff chicks in this hatch at Jack's!!!!! They are just like my bantam Buffs but HUGE. They have REALLY good feathering on their legs and feet, Big Fuzzys To me its Pure Happiness!
I need to get some pics up.

OE leg color varies with variety, For the Blue they will be dark slaty blue but are likely lighter at hatch, and possibly have lighter toes than legs, leg color gets darker when they get to 3-6 weeks. The splash may have even lighter legs sometimes they do sometimes they dont.
