***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Finally got our coop (via Craigslist) and a small run (we are hoping to be able to free range at some point)- excited for NEOCS we are going to try to be there and get some CHICKENS!!! Except I think my hubby has chicken fever and he may run out and buy some TOMORROW because it is killing him and he just can't wait!

When we finished the run today my daughter just had to climb in and check it out. I told my husband, "Forget the chickens- we've got ourselves a child-cage!!!

Oh, and I just couldn't resist posting a picture of our honey from this year's harvest- it is absolutely the most gorgeous, clearest, lightest honey I have ever seen!

That is such an AWESOME coop for the hot summers here.

It's official, the 2012 tomato harvest has started in south central oklahoma. Picked not one, not two, but four ripe tomatoes yesterday ! One as big as the palm of my hand, the others were cherry and roma's.
Addditional pickings were, 2 quarts of green beans, 1 very large head of cabbage, a few sweet banana peppers, 5 zuchinne, a handful of blackberries and blueberries, a t shirt hem full of yummy plums and a big bowl of nectarines, a few pods of okra off of the 3 foot plants.
More beets to harvest this weekend and make pickled beets from. Lots of swiss chard, lettuce and assorted greens that are ready.
Butternut squash are getting to be about 4 inches long, delectia squash are getting big, lots of little yellow squash and cucumbers are a growing. Nickle sized pumpkins, cantalopes and watermelons. sweet potatoes are vining out well. The peaches are still hard as a rock.
Green tomatoes everywhere.
The new fruit trees are doing well, the chickens love the new shade, any fruit that has fallen off of the mature trees does not last long at all, i have had all kinds of helpers with the nectarine, plum and apricot picking, they stand there waiting for something to get dropped, even bubba the calf has helped, the poor chickens don't stand much of a chance in getting the goodies first.

Good morning okies looks like a perfect one for drinking coffee and working on the coop. bout to go sneak out while the kiddos are sleeping and get r done. Don't like working in the heat and man has it been getting hot. By the by is it the 16th yet i am so ready.

Now I desperately need a frizzle cochin. You know, for science. :)

Two bantam frizzle roosters have been donated to the N.E.O.C.S. raffle. One is red and the other is white. I can take photos today and post them if you're looking for bantams. They were donated by a wonderful lady who lives in town and can't keep roosters.

I lknow the anticipation is killing me I wanna go wish it was this weekend but I still need to get some stuff together for making my raffle item so I guess Im kinda glad I still have some time

Well, well, well. Lookee here. She sat on a stolen silkie egg all day long. Didn't go to roost tonight. So I brought her in the house and put her in my (recently cleared) broody box. She ate a ton of chick starter, drank some water, and then circled the eggs a few times looking them over. Guess she was trying to decide if it was worth it, or if eggs were for loooooosers. Gave her ten minutes, checked on her, and she flattened herself down on those eggs and gave me a good talkin' to. :) Heh heh heh. Works every time. :) (And yes, this is a different broody cochin bantam. This is the sister to the one that just hatched out eggs today. MJ grows 'em good!)
yup- and you know- mj's don't have a mean streak when they are raising babies at all, growl but no biting..:)
Quote: well, i am still getting things together for it too...a table of art, some chicks, EE;s, and some goodies for the raffle... was thinking of some of the laying hens, but i can't do that to them... :)

We are making a big coop (big for us) out of mostly recycled stuff from a condemed house, and pallets. We had to buy the hardware, hardware cloth, and roofing paper, but everything else has been recycled. Which reminds me I need to post some updated pics of the progress we've made, when I get home.
post pics kass, i come thru there once in a while, so i try to find houses of people i know.

gives me someone to stalk later in the year!
