***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Quote: What kind of rooster was he?
Originally I was going to try putting like 10 hens in with each boy who overbreeds them. Then it occurred to me that was silly to go to that much trouble and expense for a single rooster (unless he was one of my favorites lol). I've got several roosters who don't have girls in with them and they seem perfectly happy so I'll try putting them in groups of 2 boys for awhile.
Robin, glad your FIL is coming home and Cathie, I hope your mom improves. For her sake and your niece's!
thank you everyone for your kind comments on my art- i love doing it!
i know what you mean about writing letters, when we were engaged hubby was in the south china sea, he didn't find out for 6 weeks i'd said yes...that was way before email and internet../.LOL!

my galahad has 18 girls and still manages to pull some feathers- but captain the banty cochin seldom has a feather out of place on his girls, and he only has 5, go figure! and the silky roo from coral has cindylou, 1 hen and never has mussed up her feathers.... it jusst depends on the roo

Thought I would give an update on Lucky, the sick little roo. He has improved greatly. I have had him on Duramycin for a week now. His feathers are coming back in and he is more alert and his eyes are no longer red. I am going to put him on clear water and put him back with the others in the next few days.

Pictures aren't so great. I was trying to get the pics using my left hand while he was perched on my right arm.

I posted pics of a really pretty bean plant flower and said I didn't know which bean it was b/c of my very poor record keeping skills. Someone really wanted to know what bean it was to plant to attract bees or butterflies I think, I can't remember if it was this thread or not, anyway the beans have started making and I now know what kind it is it is asparagus (yard long) beans. I will replant those next year the flowers are so pretty. Larger and more prominant then any of my other bean varieties.

When my husband and I were dating we lived in seperate towns and there was no internet, and neither one of us had a computer anyway. We corresponded w/ real letters, I used to use scented stationary, after we married my MIL said her mailbox never smelled nice anymore! lol

I bet the mailman appreciated it, too lol!

I feel like an addict, hiding in the closet to eat my custard! Pebbles has discovered it and thinks it is amazing and does her level best to intercept it on it's way from the bowl to my mouth.

Poco it was for the best, no electricity most of the morning, just got it back and still no water, they are doing something w/ the lines today.

Okay. Sunday it is : ) Hope you weren't inconvenienced for too long without power and water. I woke up to find haying equipment in our front pasture. Around 8:00 the driver arrived and started cutting. Good thing I'd marked my pecan trees with neon pink plastic flags earlier this week. I also planted a few pink flags around my hive and garden. I expected to get a phone call from the guy who agreed to cut, rake, and bale. I guess he's on his own schedule. The goats are going to love these bales. There are a lot of crunchy, juicy weeds growing in clumps in the front pasture. It's mostly native grasses, but the thorny bits are especially tasty for the goats.

Time for lunch. Hope everyone is enjoying the day.

Anybody know where I can get something called LS-50 around here? I've tried TSC and atwoods. Sick turkey and from what I"m reading this is my best bet at curing.

Symptoms: swollen face, runny nose, and sneezing, appetite is great.

My EE that was looking better on the Duramyacin has gone downhill again and another orp is beginning to get a red eye just like him. I think that I've got some other illness that needs better abx, from what I'm reading if it pops back after going away on D-10 or Tylan this LS-50 stuff will kick it's ***.

LS-50 is what the vet gave me for treating e.coli last year. You can get it at Jeffers:

http://www.jefferslivestock.com/lincomycin-spectinomycin/camid/LIV/cp/A2-L5/
or
http://www.jefferslivestock.com/l-s-50/camid/LIV/cp/N2-LC/
One is generic and one is not. Didn't take the time to compare how many ounces in each.
That said-I really think you should get Tylan 50 and give injections, that'll clear it up initially. I was really surprised when you said the EE got better on Duramycin as it's a weak antibiotic. You've probably got MG (Mycoplasma gallispectum) going on. Super common. They get swelled faces, raspy breathing, snotty noses. They're carriers after they get better and break out with it when stressed, it can literally be passed through the eggs also. Pretty much the majority of chickens as adults have been exposed and are carriers, some can be carriers and not show a single sign their own life, that's how common it is. Denagard liquid is $60 (at http://www.qcsupply.com/denagard-liquid-concentrate-novartis.html) for a liter and it was developed specifically for MG. I'm not sure why people use it for other things, because it's pretty specific for MG only. If your birds get better on Denagard, they had MG, period. There's a treatment dose (16 cc per gal for 3-5 days) and then a monthly preventative dose (8 cc per gal for 3 days). People that have chickens that don't care personally about them or are using them for breeding just cull without a second thought. Other's close their flocks and treat monthly. It's so so so common that it's a pretty safe bet if you've got respiratory problems, that's what it is.
More info than you wanted, huh?
ETA: I don't think you can get LS-50 local, and even if you could I don't think it'd help for respiratory stuff. I'd go with the Tylan 50 injections.

All my life growing up I have had chickens, I at one time had a few turkeys and an old man told me never run my chickens and turkeys together or let turkeys follow chickens as they can get a disease called Black Head form the droppings of the chickens and from contaminated water the chickens have walked in, I did in fact have one turkey that had all the signs you refer to here and we treated it with some medication for Black Head, if not treated early the consequences are death to the turkey, chickens don't often get it but they are carriers of it! I am not saying you have Black Head but you do need to get it on something quick, Ive bought the Tylan 50 at Atwoods in Stillwater and at the Stillwater Milling Co. also(they have a better supply of medications), Lynn
