Bill the bator is looking nice. Hopefully you can fill it very soon!
I went out today about 5 after 45 min got too hot so retreated back to the house until close to 8--- took us until a few minutes ago to finish the garden, goat, dog & bird chores! Kids are getting showered & into bed.
Told DH the dogs need an a/c of their own but he isn't sold yet. We did loose 2 pullets today. Makes our 3rd loss. All 3 have been this seasons chicks that have already been moved into the main coop. The adult birds seem good. Have a blue pullet I am worried about. She was in the barn next to the grow out pen enjoying their fan. She didn't go into her coop for dinner or bed. I found her laying there after lights out. I picked her up & put her on her roost. Will do my best to keep an eye out for her tomorrow. Also the hot weather has caused the ducks to greatly appreciate their pool. They just stand in there & pant. I don't remember my pullets doing worse in the heat than the hens last yr. I just remember most of the birds I lost last yr were welsummers.
The biggest news at my place is all 4 brooders are empty! Only 3 more wks of hatching keets them we are unplugging the cabinets. We do still have 4 different grow out pens, but no birds under lights! MJ the cochins that came from yalls original birds have such big fluffy feet now! 2 were standing next too each other & DD thought there was a dead chick on the ground. They have some many feathers on there feet that she didn't know it was their feet.
Oh-- I did have a major gardening thought. My chickens don't harm okra or green beans. Wonder next season about fencing in the okra & beans together. In my garden those are the 2 plants that get the most grasshopper damage. Think could create a good chicken yard with lots of shade. I am not sure if they would try & eat the leaves of green beans, but I know they won't eat the beans. I have given them any beans with damage & they are still in the feeder days later.
I seriously need to get some sleep! Good night all!

My husband will sure be glad when you guys get done hatching keets for the year because I'll probably stop saying "We could still get another batch of keets from the lady who sold us these. It's not too late!"

If you were able to set up an area to have an chicken animal auction on a regular bases, how would you set it up and run it ?
I have a friend that is talking about getting one going, but has not gotten it all worked out on what would be the best way to get it going.

Mine do not bother the green beans at all leaves or beans either one.

I have not heard from Donnie. I, too, miss his posts. Maybe he's back in school and working crazy hours. He's an industrious guy.

Kass - I incubated the jars for six hours. Did I need to wait longer?

Nanakat - Are the jars of boiling water covered with lids or just open? Do the jars need to be refilled with boiling water at any point?

Prettychicks - Thanks for the info. I will update my records so that I’ll know who I got the babies from.

bfrancis - That’s a beautiful incubator. Using quart jars to maintain even heat and act as a backup during power outages is awesome.
He didn't say anything about less time, just not more then 8, if it set up I would say it was plenty of time though,

Silly Question, I have a Buff Orpington that likes to randomly make a "laughing sound". what does that mean? Shes the only one that makes that noise so far? Is she laughing? or is she trying to say something? Thanks!

Can snakes climb 6' walls or fences? If so could deer netting be draped somehow on the outside walls of a coop to stop them?
A snake got through chicken wire into a pen and killed my beautiful 3 mo old Bantam Cochin boy. It tried to swallow him and couldn't so spit him out. It didn't bother the other 6 youngsters in there, why? I thought a snake small enough to fit through chicken wire wouldn't be able to kill a chick. Obviously I was wrong

I'm going to reline the 4x8 pen that little group was in with hardware cloth before they go back in there. But my Brahama & Ameraucana teenagers in their yard are going to have to be locked inside their coop at night, which I haven't done because of the heat. But can snakes climb the 6' tall walls of the coop and get in through the vented areas at the top? Also, are snakes scared of light? If I leave the light on all night in their coop, will that do any good?
BFrancis posted a link (tongs.com) for snake tongs. I just spent $100 on a pair of them.
The war is on.
