Hey Carl...what is the LED flashlight you candle with?
I took half the eggs out because they looked non productive and when I cracked them to scramble for the dogs, there was a live CW baby. I was using an LED but not as strong as yours. They didn't move just had to go by veining.

Cowboy, I think Jackie O is laying now too. I found a small light brown pullet egg yesterday. Are they full sisters or half sisters? One lays white the other lt brown.

I use a Brinsea egglume. It is a Halogen based candler.. Do you need to use it?

Hello everybody. I hope you are all doing well with this heat.

Hopefully will finish the doors on the small coop for the Red Ginger trio I have in it. It is a pain to screw the door on and off each day.

I'm going to start early in the morning and get as much done as possible before the heat gets to me.

So far, all of my chickens have pulled through the heat. My lavender orps are getting big. They should be laying either late this month or early next. Lost track of how old they are. My rooster started crowing a couple of weeks ago. I have several but only hear one doing it. I know for sure I have 2 pullets out of 8. Not so sure about the other 6.

3 or 4 are for sure roos but the other 2 could be hens with larger combs. Knowing my luck, they may all 6 be roos, but at least I have 2 that are not.

That means I will definitely have to get rid of a few roos at some point.

My baby BCM's are getting bigger. They are about a month old now. A few of them have some nice coloring in the hackles. I need to post pics to see what you all think.

Back home from Stillwater finally. Went to pick peaches this morning and ended up having to replace a tire. We went to look for sand plums on the way home from the orchard and ended up running over something and blowing out a tire in the middle of nowhere. Fun. We stood in the shade admiring someone's horse while the guys changed it out for the spare (thankfully we had one). I'm glad my hubby was with me. Was worried about the birds and rabbits in the heat since we've been setting up a mister about noon and bringing the rabbits inside about then too but we couldn't get the tire replaced until almost 2:00. They all seemed fine though they were panting a lot when we got home. Hopefully in the few cooler days we have coming we'll be able to get the garage conversion done with the a/c unit and at least not have to carry the rabbits in and out of the house every day.

Those buff cochins bantams are sure cute. I'd take them if I wasn't in limbo at the moment with income sources. If you still have them in a week or so and our situation has stabilized, I'd take them then. I just can't add not knowing what's going to happen.

I did have an idea today about a way to make some income that we would love to do. Just don't know if it's really feasible or how to market it. Instead of being a "pet" sitter, I could be a "farm" sitter ... take care of chickens, horses, goats, etc and water the garden, collect eggs, whatever needed done. I do know there are a lot of people who just don't go anywhere because they don't have anyone to watch their critters. Of course it would only be feasible within a certain distance of my home or I'd spend everything I make in gas for my vehicle.

erinszoo, where are you located? i live north of Stillwater and I used to live in Carney, there used to be a huge Sand Plum thicket on the south side of Sweethome road off 177 south of Carney about 3-4 miles north of 66!!! i sure love Sand Plum Jelly!!!! Lynn

Erin when we bough the farm I worked for an online company-- to save for us to be able to move out here --alpine access was the company but their are lots others. Was making $10.50 an hour taking calls in my PJs for a cell phone company. I was still able to homeschool the girls & I picked my schedule (it was a set schedule after I selected my hours).
On farm sitting, I pay the boy down the rd $30 a day to tend to things. He is only 5 miles or so down the rd & his parents make sure he gets the stuff done.
My girls use to make out good dog sitting & with their newspaper route in town. The newspaper route they cleared about a grand a month-- after fuel & supplies, took us about 90 min a day to run the route, but that is because each girl would run one side of the rd. Pet sitting they didn't have a set fee but everyone seem to pay $10-$20 a day depending on the animal count. Youngest DD has always had a love for $$$. The girls have set aside a good car fund & even bought their own bedroom furniture sets including all the accessories. DH was just saying yesterday how the girls seem to have more money in their pockets than he does! My girls are 12 & oldest DD will be 14 in a few wks.
