***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Joe you keep getting them big ol chickens and your gonna have to feed them kids more to help you take care of them!!!! Betsy sorry to hear about the snake, did you take care of him so he won't be gettin anymore free meals??? I had a fairly good day today!!! The weather seemed nicer today somehow!!! Hope everyone has a safe and Happy 4th of July!!! Lynn

it was so cute, i was in my brooder room. and while i was taking care of the babies and while i was in there i was doing the turkey whistle at the baby turkeys, and then i found out about how many boys and girls were in there, lol one was even strutting, lol

Yes I have heard of this tx. It is my understanding the reason it is effective is it smothers the mites, if that is the case the veggie oil should work too. I don't know if the used motor oil is changed enough to stick better or have some other property that the veggie oil would not have.
Used motor oil contains heavy metals from the wear on the inside of the engine plus contaminants from the gas vapor that escapes by the rings during combustion. The reason used motor oil is black is from the Carbon in it.

Some of the metals can include Zinc and Copper plus a bit of steel thrown in for good measure. Through time the heavy metals can be harmful and even fatal.

Personally I would use the veggie oil.

I worked too long for a vet. Give me Ivomec anyday over motor oil or Wesson

. 3 drops of Ivomec on the back of their neck and you don't have to worry about soaking anything in strange fluids :)

Yep the Ivomec will kill them straight away but results won't be seen for weeks or in severe cases of the lifted scales they may never get back to normal.

The legs take a long time to heal from any injury and most are impatient to see a difference.

To help things along after treatment warm soapy water to soak the legs in and a very soft tooth brush will help get the feces from the mites from under the scales.

Just checking in. Was sitting & bird watching when I hear the langshans making a fuss. I go to see what is wrong & the door to their coop blew open so they were all standing at the back of the pen scared. The RIR is happily sitting on her new clutch of stolen eggs. I am sure she has had a few hatch, but I will wait until she is ready to show me.
Hope everyone has a great 4th of July!
Cathie don't work too hard! I am sure tomorrow you will sell LOTS of fireworks!

Please be careful with the fireworks this year. In the past we have lost hay, had pasture burned off, the roof on the well house was nearly burned off and we have even had to do some stitch work on a colt that was scared and ran through a fence.

Even with the rains this year the grass is getting a bit crisp and as the old-timers say it's starting to back up.

With all that has been going on here I haven't had the time to do the mowing that I usually do in preperation of the 4th. I will usually cut grass around out buildings down to nearly the dirt so if fire does break out it will go slow in these areas and make it easier to put out. I do have the hoses streatched out just in case and will be starting the sprinklers around the house in the morning. If the wind will lay down the risk will go way down too.

Another special chicken treat we have been doing -- take over grown zucchini & put it in the freezer. Makes a great ice pack then as it turns to mush the chickens chow down.
Frozen squash for the chickens sounds like a "win - win". The chickens get a treat and all of the overgrown squash gets used up.

I love my guineas, despite them being dumber than dirt. I was already laughing at Old Cowboy's post and then laughed until I cried over MacGuyver's post. So true!!!!
SCORE!

About a month or so ago, I answered a Craigslist ad for layers for $5 apiece. I lucked out and called the guy first, and he let me have them. Very nice birds (5 of them) about 18 months old. Too old for his setup, but perfect starters for mine. He said he would call if he needed to move some more.

Today he called.

In two weeks I will be picking up 40 or so layers for $5 apiece. I think he wants to sell to me because he knows I'm moving mine to pasture, and he runs a pasture operation.

Exciting! Just didn't know where else to share.

Excellent bargain!!!!

Quote: Our society equates value with how expensive something is to purchase. It seems to be easier than evaluating things based upon objective quality comparison and/or reputation.

Many years ago, when I was working for myself, a potential client told me that he knew I would do a better job of something because I charged more money than the guy he hired. He sort of apologized that he couldn't afford my "quality of services". I also observed that folks were willing to pay more for the services of someone with a fancy downtown office than they were willing to pay someone with a more modest office - again because of perception that a fancy office somehow meant that you were more successful than the guy out in the suburbs working out of a converted house. Go figure.

I lost one of my babies today, little fuzzy butt, the splash chickie doo. Have no idea what happened he was all playing and being a little chickie doo w/ the rest yesterday, fine when they got put to bed, but this morning was pretty lethargic and died about mid morning.

at least his short life was spent in the garden looking for bugs w/ his other chickie doo buds.
