***OKIES in the BYC III ***

ok, honestly i hadn't noticed anything unusual with droppings, they were eating layer feed, stupid, but they were, then a few days ago one of them, the one i am holding now, began to loose coordination, legs getting weak, so i moved them into the living room for observation, the next day he was weaker, so i guess in a span of 3 days reached this point- so i started watching the other 2, one is showing similar symptoms- so yesterday i went and got manna pro, savachick and had been giving them polyvisol- this one was cheeping unless i held her, so brought her in with me, she finally hadd some droppings and has settled down

I would think they are pullets also. I have orps and some of the hens even have combs and wattles. Not as large as the roosters but it can sometimes be difficult to tell a roo from a hen if she has a comb and wattles. I also have a couple with barely no comb or wattles at all.
One of my BO hens I call Ms. Thang even has a fully developed spur on one leg (thus the name) I had thought that maybe that was due to some issue with the ovories not working right but she lays well and this year she went broody and is raising a clutch of her own she's a good Mama and armed for bear if need be LOL

CAUTION! DUMB QUESTION TO FOLLOW!

I've got 6 chicks coming and they have to be outside not inside. I have a shady area under the back deck and it's protected and safe from the big chickens etc. So If it's 90 to 100 degrees during the day that's fine but do I really need a HEAT LAMP? for nigh-time temps that are in the high 70's? Aarrgghhh!!!!
I have a heat lamp on for the brooder chicks and there are several of the 5 week old pullets that will fly up to the shelf and roost close to the light.

Sounds like Ms Thang is a special lady!

I've spent today putting up three different pickle recipes. Sister in law sent me a 1/2 bushel of cucumbers. Mine are blooming but no fruit yet.

Anyone watch GMA. Right now there is a news story on chicken feed being linked to humans experiencing more issues w super bugs. They are saying it is because chickens are eating antibiotics in their feed daily.

Attention fellow Okies, I am in dire need of some layers. I am down to one hen, ONE hen!!!!! Anyone downsizing or have any pullets about to lay let me know. I am to the point now where (gulp) I may have to buy eggs. So if you are near Pryor, Oklahoma (An hours drive) pm me with what you have. PS took care of the coon problem and coop security issue so it won't be a waste.

Thanks,

Bryce
I'm in the same boat. We have decided not to replace them yet though. We have juveniles so we will just wait until they're ready. My RIR started laying, but she is a banty. She was supposed to be full size. Not everybody is honest. I don't mind her being a little thing anyway.

Can you clip their wings like chickens?

I'm so frustrated and scared of getting males from hatching eggs (anyone want some male Bantam Ameraucana when they hatch??? or a real nice 4 wk old Cuckoo Marans cockerel?) and I got to looking at Ideal hatchery and it occurred to me (duh!) that i can get pullets only. For under $3 each. There may be a stray male in there by mistake but for the most part they're all girls. Beings I keep all the girls and they're my pets anyway I went ahead and ordered 4 Black Cochin pullets and 6 Orloff pullets (cuz I love the 6 Orloffs I have and they were hatchery girls anyway). It was only $40.00 total, can that be right?? Only $40 for all girls?? I thought shipping was another $45 on top of it or something?
It'll be nice to actually be able to fall in love with baby chicks and know there's a 95% chance I won't have to give any of them up for being males.
Yes you clip there wings just like chickens.

Ok I have roaches in the chicken sauna.

Everybody says the chickens should eat them and they won't become a problem. It sure seems like a problem to me considering I see between 3 and 5 a day. I'm really paranoid we will get them in the house. So much for cedar keeping away pests. Does anybody have any ideas on how to get rid of them safely around the chickens?

Boric acid won't hurt the chickens. Dust the areas around cracks and corners (and I mean dust like a fine dusting out of a pepper shaker or sifter or something like that. It is nontoxic, it works by putting micro cracks in their exoskeleton and dehydrating them. You can add cocoa or sugar if you like, but I wouldn't that would just attract ants, just be sure and put it where they will have to walk through it. If it gets moist you will have to replace it, its like DE doesn't work wet, bet DE would do the same.

Yes, or a mom to crawl under. You might see if one of your hens will accept them. What breeds do you have? My NN hens will flog me if I go outside with a chick in my hands and try to take it away from me.
Ha-Ha. Mine would take it away to eat it. My birds are still pretty young themseleves. No one has started laying yet. I've even found 3 little birds in the pen all pecked to death. Good times.

jcatblum these are going to be 2 or 3 day olds when i get them tiny babies!

NanaKat Thanks. I was hoping not to have to set up that glowing red eye at night for them but I'll do it. I remember when the red light was on out in the coop. It looked like it was on fire inside!
