Mommapoppy-what kind of Brahmas????? And how are you sexing them at hatch? I had to wait 3 wks to tell with my Dark Brahmas. i want more Dark Brahma girls really bad.

Thanks for the support everyone. I'm just really bummed. We spent a lot of time getting ready for the birds and I was thrilled when we got them to see how healthy and active they were and then this. I think I'm going to get one or two small (8") oscillating fans to attach to the rafters in the coop to run during the day. I really didn't think it got that hot in there but I don't want this happening again.

Artsrobyn, eventually we will replace her but until I make sure that the rest of the birds are doing really well we will just stick with the three we have for now. They were all really active tonight. My daughter took them a nectarine and fed it to them and they enjoyed that. The australorps are getting more used to us and act like they want to eat from our hands but just aren't quite sure yet.

My daughter has now named the remaining buff "Rose". She wanted to name her "Pecker" but we decided that wouldn't be age appropriate. She wants to name the two australorps but can't figure out how to tell them apart. She wanted me to mark them somehow and I told her she would just have to come up with some other way to tell them apart.

the only thing i know not to feed them is raw potatoe, sounds like they are in a good family- as far as telling the astalorps apart, their personalities will make that simple- even in the same breed, you'll see silly things- one may be nosy, one might like heights etc- i think you are off to a good start

Does anyone here know if a blind hen will still lay eggs? I went with my kids to go pick out some RIR Pullets and I ended up getting a blind hen as well. She is supper sweet, but I'm kinda worried now about my 6 hen limit with her. Do you think she will be able to lay being almost blind? Thanks.

You never no if she went blind from a sicknes or wat made her that way ..Or old age ..if it was from being sick she could pass it on to the other bird's...If not iv herd of hen's that could not see laying an hatching chick's an even had a roo that could not see a lick mate with the hen;s ...Good LUCK let us no how she turn's out an WELCOME///TO BYC

Thanks! So far I have three RIRs and one buff Orpington. I'm looking for some Easter eggers next. I want two of them, but the last lady I talked to about the just had her whole flock takin out by a neighbors dog. I felt horrible for her.

Chicken's are all doing great got a txs from my sis inlaw said she was on the plain back from Portarico today an was talking to a kid that was seting across from her he told her he was from out by chocktaw an is hobby was chicken's ..She said my brother inlaw like's bird's,,So come to find out we new one another small world she said ,,,We are haveing a game fowl meeting in Tuttle sat july 21 at noon at the Round up club every one' is invited ...lot's of new stuff going on ...Good night every one injoyd reading all your post an the kid's loved all the pic's of the chick's ,,

Had an uneventful trip home and the geese were in fine form upon arrival LOL They've calmed down and the gander hasn't shown any inclination to challenge me at all, and in fact I'm wondering and need to ask Robin if she is sure it is a gander ? I should have checked while I had it picked up but watching it and the other geese checking each other out my ganders didn't challenge him in any way and I figured that would be the first thing they would do is put him in place in the gaggle I'll let them out in a couple days I'm sure they'll be fine either way, It was nice to meet you too Kass, and good to see you again Coral, Thanks for holding on to the geese till I could get there

Joe - How does one know if a chicken carries the scaleless gene? The NN babies have black skin and are sparsely feathered. Do either of these traits suggest the babies have the scaleless gene?

Lots of the banties hatched, so I will post some pictures tomorrow along with the codes on each egg so you can help me identify the new chicks. One of the EO hatched and he looks enormous next to the rest. I'm thinking it's a he because when I reach into the brooder the little guy challenges me and pecks me or whatever I've got in my hand. There is still one NN egg pipping, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that more of the LF will hatch. They have all enjoyed fresh water, grow gel, and tomorrow they will have some baby crumble.

Because I've had several hatches that didn't work out, I'm planning to replace the wafer for the thermostat and disinfect every surface inside and out before I set any more eggs. I have always cleaned between hatches, but I think it's time to replace my wicks and completely sterilize the inside of my Sportsman. I've always run the egg trays through the dishwasher, too, so that they can be as clean as possible for each new hatch.

I have some wooden cabinet doors with heavy glass inserts. I'm wondering: If the cabinet door is the same size as the wooden door on my Sportsman, can I swap doors and expect the cabinet door to be insulating enough to maintain the temperature inside the incubator? To test this, how long wold I need to watch the temperature before I can trust that it's going to remain stable?

Bill - Nice to see you, as always. Sorry you could not stay longer. I understand about having to get home to take care of animals. The goats were happy to see my truck. They were already lining up for the milking stand before I could get their leads out.
