***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Quote: Sure, go ahead. I have several more that I really like too if you want me to pm them to you. I just didn't want to be too sunflower heavy.... I got a really good one of the farm and barn in the background.

Ok, thanks. I copied it, but haven't sent it yet. Was waiting for your ok. Yes, if you could PM me more, I'll send them to her as well. She lives in Pa. so she doesn't get to see them like we do here, and she's a sunflower nut.

Oh Kass, I'm so sorry to hear about your birds and the feral cat.

I've worried about that too with mine but so far my own cats, and the turkeys
yesss.gif
, seem to keep the intruders at bay.

Here's a pic of my husband with two of our turkeys. They've figured out that when we bring out a big plastic bowl they are going to get treats and they swarm around us. We've gotten to pick a LOT of free apples lately so the ones that don't look so nice or are too little to take the time to peel, we feed to the birds. The turkeys seem to really love them but they want them cut up small. The chickies on the other hand like them cut in half so they can pick at them until only a shell of apple skin remains.

Quote: I just wash them waterers in bleach water and give them a good scrubing, then when I refill with clean water this time I put electrolites in but usually I put a tiny bit of oxine in their water to keep alge and bacteria from building up. My 15 year old has been water man for the last few weeks since I have been working 12 hour days (which means I am gone 14 hours) and I don't trust him to not over do the oxine so he just puts plain water out for them. Our 3 gallon waterers are emptied each day by the birds but the 5 and 7 gallon ones will usually last 2 days before he dumps them and puts out fresh water.

And speaking of water we had to run to shawnee to pick up my glasses so now I need to go out and check waterers and feed everyone again, lol.

Are there wild native turkeys in America, I presume there must be. Ours drive me a bit bonkers in Australia as they compete with the chickens and enter the coop when chicks are free ranging and scoff all the food. This is the breed (from internet).

Turkeys have cool personalities!

ROFL! Robin, I remember the 10 key calculators well haha! Everyone was in awe I could add things up without looking at the keys . I love new devices! Each new device keeps an introvert like me busy for weeks.
We didn't get a drop of rain here-you all who did must be doing a lot better rain dance than the folks in my area.

Les, I hatched out 7 Araucana a month ago from eggs I got online from a great breeder with real nice birds. 4 of the 7 have tails and only 2 have the tufts growing out the side of their faces. Tails and clean faced birds have a place in breeding programs for Araucana people. I've found they don't discriminate like the majority of Ameraucana people do. I'm just not sure why so many Ameraucana people are as rigid as they are. No one denies a Cochin is a Cochin because it's legs are the wrong color or not enough toes are feathered. One thing that's consistant with each and every one of the 13 Arauacana I've got is their temperaments are astounding. I'm still in awe how gentle and kind and calm they are. Another thing I like about the Araucana breed is ALL colors are welcome, they strive to make different colors and they're all still called Araucana.

We are blessed on this thread with breeders that are very truthful about birds when it comes to someone wanting show quality birds. I have seen them take a lot of time to explain why a bird either will or won't show and if it will just what it's chances are in either the open or junior class.

Teva has a bird that could be shown as an Ameraucana but we won't do it because we know her breeding. Oh she is black with that beautiful beetle-green sheen, black legs and white on the bottom of her feet, full beard and muffs. Her dad was a Black Giant and her mom is bb-red OEGB x Ameraucana, from good show stock. We have talked about it several times though. But only at the county levels LOL

There are no Turkeys like that here! We do have wild turkeys. They look like the Bronze breed. In fact that breed was probably bred from them, maybe most breeds we have here are bred from them.
You are having winter down there now. What are the temps.? - just to tease us. We are melting here.

There are a few sub-species of wild Turkeys here like the Rio Grande and the Eastern, that's all that I can think of right now. I have heard that the Brush Turkeys build a huge nest and often court chickens come mating time. Also heard that they can be dangerous when their nest is approached. Beautiful bird though, kinda reminds me of our Naked Necks! LOL

I am in QLD and it is 9.30am on the 21st! We have VERY mild winters here. It is currently a beautiful winters day at about 27C (80.6F). Re the turkeys, I have about 10 that live constantly around my yard no matter how I try to deter them. They can also fly (quite well if scared) which really looks ridiculous.
